The U.S. has not had a truly competent President in over 40 years. The last President who had a clue about how economies really work was Lyndon Johnson, and he destroyed his Presidency with the futile and bloody Cold War gesture of Vietnam. Since then, on both the right and left, it has been a litany of mediocrity.
The chief executives since then have all been petty ideologues, beholden to new age agendas in society and economy. The U.S. has seen its place in the world in precipitous decline and now faces major economic and societal crises. So Obama is just one in a long list of people who are well beyond their level of competence.. not only unable to provide solutions, but unable to discern the problem.
If you subscribe to the 'Great Man' theory of history, it will take a cataclysmic failure of the current paradigm before someone will be able to rise above the political bickering and define a clear vision and path for the future. The last time that happened in America was with FDR, tackling the Great Depression and rampant fascism.
