Yes you may be correct that 33% of Vancouver are populated by people of Chinese descent .
But you forget to add that these people or there forebearers left China for a reason and now think of themselves as Canadian.
Funny but that holds true to peoples from Irish, English,Polish Russian Japanese,Indian and countless others.

Head to Richmond and ask everyone you see if the Chinese constitute a hyphenated loyalty to Canada and most people would say yes. During the 2010 Games, most of them had flown the flag of, or were rooting for, the PRC.
On the other hand go to interior communities of British Columbia and ask the people who descend from Russians and ask them they speak Russian, identify with Russia or have a loyalty to Russia. Almost all would say no.
This was true for the Chinese in Canada (Chinese-Canadian) but not since the 1996< migrants, about 2 million or so in total, who have effectively destroyed such community.
On the other hand not true for the historical Taiwanese or Korean community in the LML.

Sure there was a large influx of Hong Kong Chinese in the 90's Why did they leave and come to Canada?
How about Steveston?Do the Japanese there resemble Chinese to you?
Or the Veitnamese boat people of the late 70's and 80's do they resemble Chinese.
How about Loas and Cambodian immigrants can you tell the difference.
They all live here and gee they look as similarr as northern europeans to the naked eye 'but hold as much in common as
bog hoppers and limeys.
And Richmond is still one of the most vibrant communities in the lower mainland.Much more to offer than Mallairdville.
BTW Not all that many atheltes competing for China in the 2010 games you will see many more in summer 2012
Someone who does not have a basic command of grammar and spelling is in no position to debate with an academic; such as myself, who has worked near #3 road in Richmond much longer than the Chinese who came here in 1996.
Most came here as a result of concerns regarding Hong Kong's annexation into the People's Republic of China. None of these "concerns", ranging from imaginary (such as the Hong Kongese being massacred) to possible (economic decline), never occured.

Because of impending doom in Hong Kong. For the most part, the Chinese of Hong Kong wanted to remain British and the hugely vast majority fled to Canada before the handover of sovereignty to a regime widely know for the genocide and political oppression it committed. It was also, in some circumstances, easier to flee to Canada than it was to the UK.
I personally know tons of Cantonese-speaking Chinese and even understand and speak some Cantonese language because of it. From all accounts, they came to Canada for one reason: to escape the handover to communists. On the other hand, I've heard many personal accounts of Hong Kong, Cantose-speaking Chinese who have left Hong Kong after than handover because of the literal take-over of their islands by 'mainlanders'.
