no one watched last year so it was good to hear that they were interested again.

Did you see Sass's tweet about Steven? She's so sweet.

Judges are ALL too nice and let through lame people. The show really needs someone like Simon who can say harsh things like 'okay that was horrible'. It was dull, and not a lot of really good talent :sad4: .
I agree. This season is sickening. They lost at least one viewer...

I love Steven Tyler, I like that they've focused more on talent over the wacky auditions. JLo's been good, and Randy's been Randy like. Ryan seems.. happy? I don't actually miss Simon, or Kara, or Ellen.. I do still miss Paula a little, but mainly because she was a little bit crazy, lol. Paula's sort of a cross between JLo and Steven Tyler. Simon was so obviously unhappy sitting on the judges panel this past couple of years for me it's frankly a relief that he's gone.

There were a few tonight I'm interested in seeing if they make it farther. On the whole it's too early for me to get invested in anyone but we'll see what happens, I'll be watching anyway.

RIAA News Room - RIAA Announces 2010 Gold & Platinum Honors - Jan 19, 2011

While a whopping 98 songs went Platinum in 2010, notable first-time Platinum song certs included Kris Allen’s “Live Like We’re Dying” (Jive, 2009),

Nice! :)

I didn't watch tonight - anything interesting?

I never thought this show depended on the judges - I thought they were the problem. Maybe people just got used to them? I thought Simon was a jerk, Paula was a twit, and Randy was an idiot. Season 8, I hoped to like Kara, but she was a moron. This show makes you realize there are people in Hollywood who are not very bright at anything except how to be famous and make money. Too bad the show isn't done in New York, Boston, or Philadelphia. I'm sure one of the main reasons CI was better than AI is because it wasn't done anywhere near Hollywood.

Anyway -- Tyler fronts a Boston band and JLo is a native New Yorker so that might help, slightly. I don't know. Not that I don't love California. :)

Did Slezak ever post his full recap? ("but it’s time I got started on my full Idol recap, which will post right here at TVLine.com in the wee small hours of the morning.") I don't see it.

Yes, it's a relief to me as well.

Honestly, I don't really have anything else to say about tonight's episode. Some slightly interesting people, but I already don't remember their names.

There were a couple of good people tonight. Some older and some young, -- 15 is just so young isn't it? The 15 year old was really good, but so much pressure. I don't know if 15 year olds can take something like the pop culture wrecking ball that is Idol.

It's too early for me to remember names.. don't expect miracles. :)

Oh, snap! (I had to say it.. )

Well, I kind of lied, I do remember some names. There was a Sarah, no? The girl with the blond hair and the glasses? She was pretty good. And the red-headed kid was named Brent or Brett I believe. Oh, and the 15 year old boy was Jacee. And why I remember his name, you ask? Because I thought about Jaydee at that moment. Jacee, Jaydee. Anyway.

Hey, allywayzalwayz! How's it going? :)

So, there's more of this stuff tonight, right?

I'm great, thanks for asking! :)

I thoroughly enjoyed tonight's episode. I nearly cried for the skinny 16 year with long red hair. When they said that he was picked on severely as child, and that he was never invited to birthday parties, my heart just went out for the guy. He had a really good singing voice I thought and I hope he goes far - and makes lots of friends!!!

Also, the chubby 15 year old, and the special needs mom at the end, they're all underdogs I'm cheering for.

Next week Milwaukee!!!

I bet that Steven Tyler will get bored with the show quickly and won't return for Season 11. I just can't see him as a permanent judge .

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" featured Cousin Sal asking people on the street who won American Idol last year. Poor Lee, but I have to say it was funny lol.

Steven Tyler signed on for more than one year - that being said if he wanted out I don't think AI could keep him from leaving.

The Kimmel thing was funny. Poor Lee, but hey they mentioned his name & all press is good press and all that. Speaking of -Etalk showed a picture of Adam in his leather poncho in their fashion segment. Dan wasn't a fan. lol.

I don't know how CI made their audition episodes better. But they made me interested in the people. AI is more contrived so maybe that has something to do with it. I feel like skipping ahead to Hollywood week already.

Anyhow, take a look at this, from Season 5 (a season I didn't see, btw). The first season that they could play instruments in auditions. Listen to what the judges say about it. They actually talk about art! Think of that, now.

CI always kept the auditions to a much shorter timeframe than AI for one thing. I'm all for that ;) One week of audition episodes and I'm good.

Hey nice revisit of CI - I don't however remember any of those people. LOL I barely remember the 10 that made it.

Watching episode 3 though (FFd-ing) This is one of the auditioners I remembered. It made me go look him up to see what he's been up to. I liked it.

The first auditioner was Brian Melo so I thought that was a dead givaway it was Season 5. :)

If you go over to Top Idol right now she's reprinted some of that auditioner's stuff about AI. Contrast that to that first episode of CI5 - you can see that obviously CI didn't stage things a lot (like the gold ticket moments). Probably the spontaneity as well as the brevity made it better. Also I think Joan Tosoni is a better director. But also they were looking for an artist. Notice how they talked about Brian being real. So if that's what's driving the show I think everything flows from that.

The motivations behind AI, behind the judges' behavior, even some of the contestants - and the producers, of course - it's all kind of weird, to me, like they're saying one thing and doing another, or whatever. CI didn't seem to be bullsh*tting me.

I didn't see him, :) they showed Max from Montreal first in the clip that loaded for me. (I'm forgetful, but I would have remembered Brian.. I think.. lol...)

Oh, that's true for sure. No wasting film, we're cheap!! And you're right it's something that I like better too. They probably did have staged moments too, but in comparison to AI like a tiny fish in an ocean to AI.

This was the video I meant to link to. (Ep. 1 part 1). This should have the judges' comments and the other things I referred to. (Hope it works this time.)

Can-Idol 5 Videos - Dailymotion

Speaking of "all publicity is good publicity" that thing about Kris and his "agent" or "manager" seen ogling a couple of girls while out at an LA nightspot (when Kris was actually in Arkansas) comes under that heading, I guess. lol

All the winners get a little free publicity here:

I bought Hedley's new CD yesterday. It was on the shelf and it was $9.99 so I just bought it. Haven't played it yet, though. Right now I'm looking at the booklet. Lyrics, pictures.

Okay. I bring this up occasionally but no one ever cares :( - so I'm demanding feedback (damn it!). A lot of Hedley's lyrics are obtuse. Like free-style poetry. "Original" Hedley (pre-2004) songs, even more so. Nowadays, isn't this unusual, at least for a pop/pop-punk band? Seems like every album gets a bit more literal, with songs like Cha-Ching and The Sweater Song. But what is Gunnin' all about? (esp. the original?) I don't know but it's beautiful. Anyway, how many bands or singers these days do obscure songs (like Gunnin', or Trip)? Similar to the later Beatles. What part does cannabis play in all this? :) Do you think a lot of Jacob's fans think about and try to interpret lyrics? Or do they even notice what they're singing along to? I'm honestly just curious.

Independent art.. nice. CI was always more eager to embrace the individuality in an idol contestant. Ha I forgot Faber Drive, Eva and Katherine McPhee performed at the auditions

WEll, alright then..I'll give it my best shot.

Gunnin..

I think that was about anorexia from what I recall. (and I like both versions but the original one is just subtler and it's my fave too) In regards to the lyrics I think that's the way Jacob thinks.
Like free-style poetry. "
is a good way to put it. When you read his blog it's all like that. Difficult to follow, but not imposssible if you know what he's like. Whether or not Hedley's fans decode the lyrics I think the answer would be some do and some don't - same as any artist. Sometimes you can listen to a song for years and then suddenly have a revelation about what the song's about. So probably depends on the fan. Art changes meanings depending who perceives it too.. so what it means to me might be something totally different to what it means to you, and something totally different to the artist.

Cannabis probably also played a part :)

and the songs getting more literal is probably an affect of the producers they've been working with who are trying to herd them towards more widespread commercial success. Something they've all expressed an interest in.

Did you get the Live album with the DVD? It's got Beautiful on it. One of my faves.
