Well, it's just a gut reaction I didn't expect. Until I actually started watching the show again, I didn't realize how all this other stuff would affect my enjoyment of it.
I mean, I suppose it's because I can vote. And voted in the past. That plays a big part in how I feel. Kris being a dark horse, it mattered even more to vote him all the way. Now, when the show actually says it doesn't matter how I vote, that they have their favorites, regardless, well - the whole premise is absurd and I feel like I'd be wasting my time.
I couldn't get invested in another contestant. If I liked the person, it would always be in the back of my mind that it doesn't matter. Idol might just as well pick who they like, now, not even have a competition. Skip the rest of it - they probably already know who they want.
Strangely it was Rushfield's book that seemed like the final straw, even though he has nothing to do with the show. It just left me with the impression that there's a myth being constructed that's going to be hard to ever deconstruct. I mean, isn't anybody intelligent? Have they all drunk the Kool-Aid, now?
It's like The Emperor's New Clothes, to me. I watched the season. I'm not stupid. Kris always has at least one song in those "Top Idol performances of all time" lists for a reason. You can tell us you don't like how we voted but don't tell us we were wrong. That's a reflection on him and he doesn't deserve it. It's painful to see someone that good treated that way. Unfortunately I think they'll end up convincing a lot of people he sucks.
