Today's country is mostly pop music it got away from its base and if it isn't
careful it will struggle again like it did a decade ago. Remember the whole
drugstore cowboy thing? Country went into the deep freeze. The reason
it returned to its roots but the country fans had left for their tape machines.
Today one has to be more careful, you can';t desert your base because
many people have their favourites on tape or CD. I have a huge collection
of music, Country, Rock, Heavy Metal, and so on. I listen mostly to country
but not a steady diet of the new stuff.

At risk of getting off topic another genre of music I like a lot is Irish music.

Well if you like that as i do then good ole Cajun style music should be right up your alley, along with Acadien music. Same as the French /Metis music from out west, Manitoba west -

We went to see crazy heart; anyone who likes Wilie/Waylon/Kris/etc would probably like this flick, it was great, even for a non-country fan. The music was excellent, very, very well written.

Gotta agree with JLM ~ as I wrote above, I have heard today's C & W music. Unfortunately, it does not appeal to me. That is not to say that the music isn't good. It's just that I don't like it.

As for being closed minded, consider all those right wingers who boycotted the Dixie Chicks songs and refused to allow it on C & W music stations. There was no talk of closed mindedness back then. Remember? It was only after Bush's two wars were said to be utterly stupid endeavors by the majority of Americans that those stations allowed the Chicks music back on their stations.

Here is another good artist that is a carry over into the pseudo C & W era, but ranks up there with the best.

Yes the right wing did go too far with the Dixie Chicks situation. For me
I am not a right winger. I don't mind pushing the limits that is how you
get new ideas and new concepts in music, the country outlaws did that.
The problem is the country label has strayed too far from its roots and
now its pop with a tiny streak of country in it. That is not to say I don't
like all of it. Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, Alan Jackson, and even the
high ego Toby Keith, is good music. It is some of the other fluff I don't
like. Reba is country. I think one of the biggest problems we face in
country music today is the radio stations. We need to have a balance
of music from over the years. If we had that younger listeners would
have some connection and knowledge of what came before. I give you
one example, There was a recent song called Where Corn Don't Grow.
same lyrics, same beat and yet it was a hit for Waylon years ago, it is
nothing new, just a different group. I played the original that Waylon had
and he actually preferred the Waylon version. Now he likes the new
country but he has been going through my old stuff and has found a lot
of stuff he likes. I don't go about condemning the new country everywhere
I go, but I do speak up for the old stuff. Really there are many people right
here that prefer one or the other so the Country Music tent is big enough
for all of us, and that is what I suppose makes this genre so much better
than most. People have strong opinions and a connection with country
old or new. Just think of how much better it would be if today's country
fans were introduced to all of it, current stuff and country gold.

Can't disagree; interestingly that was one of the subplots of Crazy Heart - the old style original hardcore music vs the newer glammed up versions of the same songs...

Of course you are really saying that you agree. Never mind being difficult as that is not your nature. Reba can sing like all get out and from the heart, with a story and you can feel the emotion. Now thats Country.

Near as I can recall, I never said she doesn't. In fact I distinctly remember saying that I don't doubt the talent out there today. That said, it's simply laughable to suggest that rehashing cheesy 70's pop tunes constitutes good "country" music.

I'll put "Sunday Morning Coming Down" against "That's The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia" any day of the week.
