Horse is now OK to eat in Australia and we may even learn to like it, say leading foodies. Perth butcher Vince Gareffa, known as the Prince of Flesh, has led the charge by getting special permission from the West Australian government to supply the gamey meat to the public.
Mr Gareffa, who also supplies chefs across the country, opened his Perth shop yesterday with fresh horse meat for sale.

I've wanted to try horse but haven't as yet had the chance,tryed to find some in Montreal once.Is it like moose ? I like moose. My dad used to say I'd eat anything I could yank my neck up over

No. Horse is nothing like swamp donkey. Ever seen a horse graze in a swamp?

Yuk! Eating horse is like eating your cat or dog. The idea is repulsive. Horses are pets. I know - some cows are too but for the most part, cows are raised as food for us.

VanIsle, I used to be in pony club. Part of our education was the simple fact that many many many ponies and horses are not fit, due to lack of training, physical reasons, temperment, etc., for use as riding animals or 'pets'. So every day, all day long, across this country and every country that has horses, there are auctions, where those unsuitable animals are sold to be ground up for dog food or rendered down for glue or gelatin. By and large, they are not 'pets'. The fox-meat dealer always used to leave the auction with more horses than anyone else.

I tried horse a long time ago. Consistency-wise I think it was a bit like really tender moose. It tasted nothing like moose, though, because horses and moose don't eat the same stuff.
Animals are animals. If we are going to eat animals, it's silly to be choosy about which ones we eat unless there's a medical reason for it. As long as there's respect for the fact that it is/was a life, why should there be any difference between a cute little deer or grouse than a horse or a sheep?

I don't like eating the cute little grouse or deer either (or goose or duck). For some reason it feels okay if they use some ponies to feed dogs - just not humans. My "meat" diet only includes beef, chicken, pork and some fish. I don't like lamb either. I've had deer meat and it's okay but now that we live where so many deer wander around us, the idea of eating one becomes gross as does the mere smell of lamb cooking. Parts of a moose are okay (roast, steak but not so much the ground meat). My husband used to go hunting for ducks and geese, (pheasants and the like) but I always told him to leave his catch with his parents in Edmonton, then Calgary. He tried to bring some home a couple of times but not ever have I been able to handle the taste. He has not been hunting for years now. His parents passed on long ago so I don't know what he would do with the meat. I cannot see our kids eating it either. They would be as grossed out as me. Each to their own.

Thank you,texture ,horse is similar to moose texture wise. What the critter eats is my criteria for me eating it.Think of a pidgeon gross,now a "country " pidgeon,that eats pretty much the same as a partridge,walla they taste pretty much the same.
I've stopped eating frogs because they'er vanishing,and i don't trust clams,razor clams and the like any more and i don't eat raw liver anymore.I remember hunting with my father when i was little and eating the liver with the steam still coming off it. Now even here in the back country wit no industry for forty miles{except of course blueberrys and clear cutting} the rivers are dieing.Ok now I'm depressed.

Yup. Each to their own. I love my chickens. They amuse me, they give me companionship when I am out there with them, they clean bugs out of my garden, they rely on me for water and some food, they let me pick them up and pet them, but I still love roast chicken with dressing, veggies, spuds, & gravy.

If I recall correctly, a few years back there was a butcher shop on Hastings in Vancouver with a big neon sign that read "Fresh Horse Meat".

There was. Bought horse meat there on the 70's. We have used mares milk in coffee as well. Not bad, very pale but rich. If you give it to someone don't tell them until after they finish their coffee. Some times people will dump it out when they find out what it is.

A Czech fella I knew ate horse regularly. I tried it a couple times when invited over. He makes really good sauasage, nice and lean.
