The ones I remember stressed travel and gaining a career and I remember a little of a ditty, "There's no life like it....." lol. I don't remember anything about humanitarian efforts on tv.

In the 1980's the US Navy ads were all about travel.
Now they show mostly SEALS with some footage of aircraft carriers and subs. The funny thing is that there are just a handful of SEALS so I would say that it is just to get the potential recruit in the door.
"Sure you can be a apply to be a SEAL but we need to get you signed up for another job to get in."
Which would be the truth. Each Navy recruit can take the initial SEAL test at Navy Recruit Training but only few are selected. The test is insane as it should be.
