3.one of the 1st groups to treat an album as a work of art in its own right instead of just a collection of singles

4.they unofficially halted the practice of artists making foreign language versions of their hit singles,thus unofficially making english the official language of rock and roll and all its sub-genres.klaus meine of the scorpions said that when they started,that the only way they would really make it big was to record in english.i attribute this to the beatles influence

5.they made it fashionable for men to grow their hair long

6.they pioneered the big world tours as we know them today,i think the beatles were actually the first band to go on a world tour

7.they were the first band to actually express their true feelings on major world issues of the day instead of keeping quiet(as brian epstein wanted them too)

8.they were the ones who brought the music and instrumentation of india to the west(first western rock band to use indian instruments on record)

9.they were the 1st rock group to actually make money from their record sales and have record sales in the millions.let's put things in perspective,before the beatles record companies used singles and albums to promote the live show of whatever artist it was because the live shows where were the real money was.it wasn't expected for an artist to actually make any money from their singles or albums.in fact before the beatles you could sell 200,000 copies of your latest record and have a hit(nowadays,you sell that much its considered a flop).at 1 point during i want to hold your hand's run on the charts,it sold over 1.5 million copies in 5 days,that's 300,000 copies a day,in 1964 this was unheard of.no artist back then was expected to sell that many copies of anything.in fact the next single can't buy me love had so many advance orders(over 1.5 million)it actually debuted at number 1 on the singles charts.nowadays,with soundscan and all that acts debuting at number 1 is old news,but in 1964 it was news because no one had ever done it before in america.

10.1st rock group to take a stand against segregation:when a rumor went out that the audiences at a beatles concert at the gator bowl were going to be segregated,the beatles and their manager sent a letter to the venue owners stating if they were going to do that,then they could have their money back and that the beatles weren't going to do the show.now there were never plans to do that,but it says a lot about the beatles to take that type of a stand.

11.one of the 1st rock groups to start their own record label.

Poetry, song and autobiography have been interlinked for millennia. In my pioneering-travelling life for and in the Canadian Baha'i community, beginning in 1962, the music and words of The Beatles and Bob Dylan, the culture of the sixties and my own autobiography come together in an interesting cross-fertilization. Bob Mason's unpublished PhD Thesis on 'The Dialogue Between the Beatles and Bob Dylan'1 illumined, for me, this triangle of relationships.

To take but one of many possible examples, the very month I decided to be a member of the Baha'i community in the Dis trict of Franklin on Baffin Island among the Inuit, October 1965, The Beatles' hit "Nowhere Man" was released, as Mason informs us. Most of the Beatles' songs were about their coming to terms with autobiographical issues, about changing society, about drugs and after 1965, about a dialogue between these megastars.

Paul McArtney said, in a song he wrote in the 1990s, that the members of his group, The Beatles, always came back to the songs they had been singing because these songs told them, and everyone else who was interested, where they were at. George, Paul and John were great songwriters. Collectively they were creative, and they came up at a time where they could control their creativity. George Martin, long time Beatles producer, said he was amazed at the ideas they kept coming up with (like splicing the marching band into Yellow Submarine).

Yep, there's no denying their greatness and some of their tunes were kind of catchy, although they didn't adhere to my particular genre of music that much. I was more into guys like Johnny Cash, Hank Snow and Hank Thompson.............but to each his own. :smile::smile:

The Beatles did pretty good.Personally, though, I don't think there is a comprehensively best band, though, only bands that are best in a few aspects. For example, as a jazz band, the Beatles weren't that great.

Mariah Carey has the most played song on the planet at the moment (played over 8 billion times). That's pretty effective, too.
Santana has been around since around 1968 and is still going. Pink Floyd, since 1965. The Stones, 1962. Gordon Lightfoot, since before the 60s.

There are very, very few musicians today who write good melodies like that. In my youth, I was never a Beatles fan, I preferred The Who and The Kinks, but I've come to appreciate how well written their music was. That takes major talent.

Yes, you make a good point. I was a Beatles fan when I was growing up. They were definitely superior to other groups of the day.
What is really amazing is that they were together for only 10 years.
They had more #1 albums in England than any other group.
Time Magazine included the group in their top 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
Billboard magazine names them as #1 in their top 100 artists.
They received 7 Grammy awards and 15 Ivor Novello awards for British songwriters.

I think what differentiates the Beatles from most bands is how they structured songs. Most songwriters write songs with verses and choruses. Some include bridges. Most of the Beatles songs had verses choruses and bridges. World-class bridges. Bridges that weren't just song-fill, they defined the songs with great transitions.

No denying they were a great band - they had good lyrics and one of the first (well ok - Elvis was as well) well oiled marketing machines, but for me? Queen. Lyrics, performance, music ... like you said - to each his own. :glasses7:

I hated them and found their songs pointless and shallow growing up as a child..... then around the age of 18-19, I began to give their music a bit more of a fair listen and began to like much of their music (most of the stuff that weren't big on the radio that is)

Then I got into smoking weed and doing LSD in my early 20's and then I started to really think about their songs, how they were put together, the lyrics, etc....... and then I came back to my original conclusion that they sucked, most of their music had no real meaning and for the most part, made popular because it was nothing but drug-induced nonsense and noise that the drugged up hippies of the time grabbed a hold of because their lives were nothing but drug induced nonsense as well...... I mean hell, I was even on drugs when I tried to listen to them and found no sense in the music.... these hippies must have been on some heavy sh*t to like that crap.

I won't deny they were liked/loved by a crap load of people and a lot of musicians to follow were influenced by them to one degree or another and that there's a big fan base out there for it..... but I personally see the Beatles as similar to Star Wars.

Flashy, entertained a bunch of people, but way over-hyped, shallow and pointless trash when you really think about it.
