Actually coldstream is right on the money. Khomeini said some awfully strange things. Hubby or I posted a bunch of things that were quoted from his book.

Well, the Islamic clerics are at it again, issuing fatwas right and left. Women in Saudi Arabia should give their breast milk to male colleagues and acquaintances in order to avoid breaking strict Islamic law forbidding mixing between the sexes, two powerful Saudi clerics have said. They are at odds, however, over precisely how the milk should be conveyed.

Sheikh Al Obeikan, an adviser to the royal court and consultant to the Ministry of Justice, set off a firestorm of controversy recently when he said on TV that women who come into regular contact with men who aren't related to them ought to give them their breast milk so they will be considered relatives.

"The man should take the milk, but not directly from the breast of the woman," Al Obeikan said, according to Gulf News. "He should drink it and then becomes a relative of the family, a fact that allows him to come in contact with the women without breaking Islam's rules about mixing."

[FONT=&quot]But his remarks were followed by an announcement by another high-profile sheik, Abi Ishaq Al Huwaini, who said that men should suckle the breast milk directly from a woman's breast.

[/FONT] Shortly after the two sheiks weighed in on the matter, a bus driver in the country's Eastern Region reportedly told one of the female teachers whom he drives regularly that he wanted to suckle milk from her breast. The teacher has threatened to file a lawsuit against him.

It seems Islam gets weirder, more extreme, more vicious every day.

The thing is though that some will assume that all Muslims worship these clerics. Now I'm sure there are some who blindly follow these clerics just as there are some who blindly follow their local priest, reverend or rabbi. But others are literate enough to read their sacred text for themselves and come up to their own conclusion.

We shouldn't confuse a cleric's fatwa with Islam.

That may be so, but this was not a fatwa by a rogue Imam or Ayatollah, this was a fatwa from the advisor to the Royal Court and consultant to the ministry of justice and as such, I assume carries considerable amount of clout. It does not matter whether majority of Muslims agree with him or not. Indeed, if this had not been uttered by such an influential person, I don't think this would be newsworthy at all.

In an Islamic dictatorship such as Saudi Arabia, official utterances are very important. As Sir Joseph Porter remarked in HMS Pinafore,

“Captain Corcoran, it is one of the happiest characteristics of this glorious country that official utterances are invariably regarded as unanswerable.”

Now here Sir Gilbert was simply poking fun at British government, but this happens to be true in Saudi Arabia. So the remarks by the cleric are not to be dismissed lightly.

Sure there are some Christians who hold fringe opinions. But if the Pope were to come up with crazy decrees like this, you may be sure that people will notice and there will be uproar. Sheikh Al Obeikan appears to be very influential is Saudi society, perhaps comparable to Pope in the western world.

Anyway, this raises another question. Does the fatwa hold for other bodily fluids as well? How about sweat, spit, urine, tears etc.? Will they do in place of breast milk (after all, not every woman can produce breast milk)? And if so, how are these fluids to be ingested?
