N.Korea seizes S.Korean assets, warns of war

SEOUL - North Korea seized South Korean-owned assets at a mountain resort Friday, warning that the two countries were on the brink of war over the sinking of a warship on their disputed border.

The communist state also declared that highly symbolic cross-border tours to the scenic Mount Kumgang resort had been halted for good, accusing South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak of pursuing "confrontation" with the North.

The action comes after a South Korean warship sank after a mysterious explosion last month, killing 46 sailors, with South Korea's media reporting that their country's military suspects North Korea is to blame.

The tensions prompted U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to say Friday she hoped there would be "no miscalculation" that could spark a new war between the Koreas.

"I hope that there is no talk of war, there is no action or miscalculation that could provoke a response that might lead to conflict that is not in anyone's interests," the chief U.S. diplomat told reporters in the Estonian capital Tallinn, where she is attending a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

"We have said time and time again that North Koreans should not engage in provocative actions and that they should return to the six-party talks," she said, referring to talks for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Earlier, a North Korean state agency warned: "The situation has reached such extreme phase that it is at the crossroads of a war or peace, much less thinking of the resumption of the (cross-border) tour.

"It is quite natural that we can no longer show generosity and tolerance to the south side under this situation."

North Korea last week expelled staff and sealed five buildings at the Kumgang resort owned by the Seoul government, in protest at Seoul's refusal to restart the tours.

It said Friday it was seizing the five buildings while freezing "all the remaining real estates" at the resort and expelling all management personnel.

South Korea said the North's latest action at Kumgang violated contracts between the neighbours.

"It is an unjust step that undermines the very foundation of relations," the unification ministry said in a statement.

The move came hard on the heels of a report by the South's Yonhap news agency Thursday which quoted a senior military source as saying it was suspected that North Korean submarines attacked the ship with a torpedo.

Pyongyang, which has denied responsibility, accused Seoul of linking it to the blast "deliberately," describing Lee as a "traitor."

"The puppet group went the lengths of crying out for the total severance of the North-South relations and trumpeting about 'not ruling out a war' while deliberately linking the sinking of its warship to the DPRK (North Korea)," it said.......

Continues on Above Link.

Indeed, in news I read yesterday, the South was claiming the North used suicide subs to move close to their ship and blew themselves up.

Can't say I know which way this situation is heading towards, either war or just more chest thumping.... but it seems to have moved to the next stage non the less.

The North makes these sort of declarations & hissy fits when they feel they feel they are being ignored, nothing new.

This is a possible flashpoint in world politics because many South Koreans feel wronged at having two countries. They know being one nation of 80 million people would give them greater power in the world. And they worry much more about China's "peaceful rise" than we do.

Attacking a military vessel is a justification for war. No UN approval is needed. If evidence comes out that North Korea torpedoed the ship. It could be an issue in SK.

But SK, being the 51st state, will doctor the evidence with the USA. Just like in 1988 with the Olympics and Ben Johnson took the fall. A person from an unimportant country such as Canada, and no Americans. What a coincidence.

I highly doubt that SK would doctor evidence in order to go to war with NK. Even with SK's modern & technically superior armed forces, NK would unleash artillery upon Seoul, destroying a good chunk of their infrastructure & economy.

That's what they always say, but a little planning and a surprise attack with extensive carpet bombing of those 50 year old artillery sites, would reduce damage by a great deal. No war will occur of course, but the NK army is big junk heap. NK makes no money aside from insurance fraud, contraband cigarettes, and a few other scams to keep the rulling clique in luxury-relatively speaking. They export nothing and the country is dark at night as it has no urban lighting.

If North Korea did march into South Korea the international community are powerless to do anything unless they had the support of the Chinese.

Today with the economic upheaval who is going to challenge China?

All the international community can do is sanctions but with China holding large amounts of debt on key and powerful countries sanctions will not happen either.

When North Korea does take over South Korea then Korea will become a province of China.

When Hong Kong was close to being handed back to China by the British a lot of citizens came to other countries to get their citizenships and went back and for the smart and wealthy South Koreans this is what they will do as well.

No no no, the North Korean army is too weak, it couldn't take over anything. And the Chinese couldn't care less about NK, commyville is done, they're getting rich and NK is stagnating. China is only concerned about loser NK is that they might blow up the golden goose.

This region is volatile and NK's sinking of a SK ship was a big mistake. The status quo will likely prevail.

Correct. The well trained and well equipped South Korean army is certainly not to be ignored, not to mention that 50,000 US troops are stationed along the 38th parallel, forcing NK to kill Americans in any invasion. The North Korean government might be completely incapable of creating a prosperous society but it is not suicidal.

The North might not be the most technically advanced military, but what they lack in technology, they make up for in sheer numbers of troops.... and I'm sure that if a war did break out, China and a few other countries wouldn't hesitate in shipping off to them some new tech and equipment, for a price of course.

The US military and economy was in shambles before WWII started, and once war began, there was work for the people and there was advancement in military technology and tactics.

Plus the fact that there was no winner in the Korean War, obviously fighting a war against the NK won't be a simple cake walk.

So it is the fault of the US that Ben Johnson juiced up and got busted by the International Olympic Committee.

Of course.

Truth is, many other athletes, including Americans were also taking steroids and they were not caught in Seoul. And that is partly because South Korea is a very close US ally and if someone had to be caught, then a non-American would be. The Korea govt works very closely with the US govt, they look out for each other here. So the US would not take a fall.

The recent UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, from Korea, is a nice quiet man. Much more secretary than general at the UN, which pleases the US greatly. No third world agenda at play here with this guy. No criticism of the US or IMF here from this quarter. Doesn't rock the US boat.
