6 of those 15 were there due to two deaths and three resignations so the party was leaderless. What sort of opposition must there be when a leaderless party gets in? (Arthur Meighan, 1926 - when Mackenzie-King (Lib) was fired)

See ... Interim means unelected - either in a General Election or by the party

Prime Ministers of Canada

2 interim PM s resigned because of party pressure to save the party from ruin. The had little to offer to people and the grass roots wanted them out. Speaks a lot about substance…….

The other 3 interns lost an election, again what is that say? They were top notch and the people got rid off a top notch politician? No the opposites the had no plan and no one fellows anyone with out a plan.

So I am sorry for involving in my litany a dead guy, 5 is a record to study why the could not get to second base, answer is simple NO PLAN to entice the people with.

Look the Conservative record speaks for it self, it is a dismal one, debt upon debt with carrots for dessert.

3RD PM John Abbott (interim) June 16, 1891 - December 5, 1892 Resigned

4TH PM John Thompson (interim) December 5, 1892 - December 12, 1894 Resigned

5TH PM Mackenzie Bowell (interim) December 21, 1894 - May 1, 1896 Resigned

6th PM Charles Tupper (interim) May 1, 1896 - July 11, 1896, 2 months, 10 d. Lost election

8TH PM Arthur Meighen (interim) July 10, 1920 - December 29, 1921* 1 year, 5 months Lost election

9TH PM Arthur Meighen (2nd time) (interim)² June 28, 1926 - September 25, 1926 2 months, 27 d. Lost election

Yeah.... Okay Sock  You can be right.

While you're there, why not ask the Easter Bunny why Mackenzie King was fired and an "incompetent" Meighan replaced him.

Reality's a beach, huh?

Longevity means dick.

Exactly. Forget merit or anything worthwhile, if they last a long time that's the important thing. Quantity over quality. yup.

Hey if you call this below quality you got serious problems in identifying what is good for you politically. And Ultimately your pocket

There are about 24,000,000 Canadians (out of a total population of 31,000,000) over the age of 17 paying income taxes on their earnings. A $56 billion operating deficit for just one year must be borrowed from banks, pension funds, individuals who buy government "bonds" such as Canada saving bonds or treasury bonds, and other financial instruments. This debt is directly payable only by Canadian taxpayers. This year's debt alone is $56 billion, which is a $2,350 debt for the average taxpayer – you! In just one year of government deficit!

But it's worse than just a massive delayed tax when the Gov't borrows money; it sucks that money out of circulation for the use of private enterprise. Businesses that need to borrow for expansion, construction, capitalization, research and development, new machinery, and exploration, find that money available for loans is scarce and often unavailable because government has borrowed $56 billion in one year that would have been available to business.

split hair if you like the majority of voters have voted for the Liberals through out history. The NDP doesn’t even register in the radar You or others here can nock me all you want the history won't change.

No plan no follow, massive debt for the next 7-8 years is a bad plan. I don’t follow crap like that.

...but did the Libs under Iggy not call for more spending to stimulate the economy?

How would they have balanced the budget?

what do you really think for a minute the Liberals would have presented the same math 56B in one year, come on. Are you for real? Comparing elephants with hippos is a stretch big stretch.

Sure, I use the same fugures and conditions the cons (some within the Harper cabinet) used when Bob Rae ran up deficits in Ontario....that was bad....somehow this time....it's good.

I do know this...the Tories are spending more than the Libs did and threw away 17 billion in income by cutting the GST....so...we had a wittle recession...is this not time to reduce spending as per the request of Reformers and Cons in the 90's?

Roll your chair outside and get some sun.

Conservative legacy can be summed up very briefly. Borrow and spend. Cut taxes for the rich and screw the poor. Net transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich. Sky high debt and sky high deficits, putting our descendents into hock for generations to come. It is the usual legacy of conservatism, happens every time conservatives are in power, nothing unusual about it.

Did they or did they not want more stimulous spending?

The cons were gonna do nothing until the pact with the seperatists was formed.

There was an interesting segment on tonights News Hour about some of this money the Conservatives are supposedly squandering. It is 25 (or so) km. section of the Trans Canada Highway in western Alberta being up graded to the tune of about $300 million dollars, putting hundreds of people to work and 1/3 of the money spent is directed at environmental improvement whereby thousands of wild animals will be saved by constructing dedicated wild life crossings and making the highway safer for traffic and saving countless human lives. I'm not sure what the exact source of the money is or how and when it will be paid back, but the money spent today is going to feed the people who will be paying it back in the future. One thing is it is going into the pockets of working class people, not the rich as some proclaim. Just thought maybe the Conservatives could use a little credit amidst all the bad mouthing.

We will find out at election time. But right now Harper is in power, not Liberals. The relevant question here is, is Harper balancing the budget, and how much deficit is he running?

What Liberals will or will not do will be presented to Canadians at the time of election campaign and Canadians will pass judgment on it. But that is really not relevant right now.

Sure it is...the Libs were howling about stimulus spending and how the cons weren't doing enough so they formed a deal with a party that hates 90% of Canada to force the cons the spend billions.

My question stands....how do the Libs balance the books....tax increases...spending cuts in other areas....tranfers to provinces? They don't even suggest how they would do it now.

Sad bunch if you ask me.

Absolutely I would agree....not stupid.....and I initially fell for the 'Little Guy from Shawinigan" charm......(not enough to vote for him, he is a LIBERAL (shudder) after all)

But WOW, in power....just fricken dangerous.

I soon learned to dislike him....immensely.

A consumate politician.....and that is NOT a compliment.

It is the best thing I can say about him.

Hey Colpy , you describe him as a consumate politician, according to consumate translation is (adj.)1. having experience; having knowledge or skill from observation or participation. and this is not a compliment? How is that?
