like i said you cant really have a top 5... Alexander is a great general didnt he perfect the flying wedge or?

It was Alexander's father Philip II who developed the phalanx, which was a box type formation if infantry about 36 men deep. Alexander used this formation quite effectively against the mobs sent at him. Alexander's real talent was his order of battle, he was a master at organizing his units for complicated battle maneuvers. The flying wedge/wedge formation was a Spartan development.

OMG Jersay and "I Think Not" you two are the funniest ever! While I have to agree and dissagree with a number of talking points, as far as greatest empires I am going to go with those that had a true ambition to bring the world together and make the lands under thier rule a better place. The Roman demonstrated this best in my opnion. Relative to their time, they spent an awful amount of effort on takeing conqured lands, putting locals in charge, building roads, aquaducts, bridges. They also ensured saftey with soldiers set to guard roads and bridges etc for safe passage of all. I also have to hand it to the British for being such a small band of merry men and yet subdueing so many of us or stuping us into following the crown. You cant help but love British galantry and heroism. But still, the British had the manpower of an entire Island to draw upon, the Roman only laid claim to one city, Rome.

whats this zionist thing? all i know is that it involves jews and bankers

can someone fill me in?

Zionism was a 19th century movement aimed at the reestablishment of the state of Israel, following centuries of discrimination and persecution in Europe. Here are a couple of links that might help.

A Definition of Zionism
Zionism and the Creation of Israel - Definition and History

There is a lot of myth and nonsense associated with the movement, both by Jews and people who do not like Jews. I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions.

Well i will conclude they aint no empire, because im sure if they lost the backing of america or the EU, they would be done on their own... Id say the french empire napeolon created was mightier than the zionist empire

That's a dangerous conclusion. You would be safer to conclude that the highway was not full of cars.

I think any empire that is peaceful, promotes high standards in education, research, development, responsibility towards our world, etc. would be cool. Most of the human empire does that sometimes, I think.
I'll add that a truly great empire has the sense to not stick its nose in other people's business.

My choice is The Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Empire has commanded n conquered 3 continents,24million km2 land about 700 years. Mediterranean was our lake. I think the greatest empire was ours.

Every single empire will fall eventually, none can last forever(except maybe the brits:D),but even when they become yet another paragraph or page in the history books, their cultural legacy is what conqures the lands that they couldn't long after they're gone.In my opinion culture is the real mesure for ones greatness and with that being said i think we can all agree that The Ottoman Empire is hands down the greatest of all(No disrespect to others of course.) with the incredible number of ethnic roots it shelters, perhaps the UN of the past(and of course the fact that the original founders,The Turks is arguably the oldest and most glorious culture of all),magnificent structures(mostly mosques palaces and fortresses)art, scientific discoveries, its humanistic and tolerant politics towards every single culture regardless of their colour religion etc.(The turks were the ones who opened their doors to the jews who at that time had a pretty bad reputation in europe. The most remarkable one is perhaps the ottoman navy under the comand of ''Hızır Reis'' saving the jews that were banished from Spain)So without further ado my choice is the Ottomans(And just for the record me being a turk also does not effect my decision at all:D)
