Tedious Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The ceremonies were uniquely Canadian. The Chiefs showed up late. Even a recording couldn't mask how bad Ashley MacIsaac is. Spent a billion on security and Gretzky has to fight of yahoos to light the torch.

I loved it it. Light show as awesome.
It happens - things go wrong - but in Atlanta? bus drivers panicked because they did't know the roads. They stopped driving and left their athletes in the vehicles while they were on the way to their venues. On the other hand, the 76 Olympics used the military who put their drivers into place months before, and they actually leaned the road s of Montreal - no problems.Times change, the needs for security have changed but at least they're trying to find a happy medium between isolating the public and allowing them to mob the athlete. Do you actually have a solution acompanYing your rant? CAn you think of a way that they could have handled it better yet still remaining safe? and quite frankly, I liked Ashley McIsaac.

I only saw the opening of the ceremonies, then had to go
out, but the first nations showing was amazing, brought
tears to my eyes, the farthest thing from boring I can
think of. Very appropriate, and classy.

I arrived home just in time to see Gretzky being escorted
to the lighting of the external flame, I was hoping for
someone else, but I guess he's OK to do it, and that long
ride in the back of the truck was not for a woman
all dressed up anyway, raining hard, so it worked
out fine, and it was nice to have all the people of the
street, so included in that part of the ceremony, they
walked and ran alongside his truck all the way to the
cauldron by the park.

Ashley MacIssac is awful. Screeching bloody awful. Anyone who can actually play that instrument knows how bad he is.

Aside from that dork, I enjoyed it.

However, it would've been a lot better if everyone didn't lipsync. It was plastic enough. Fake everything including the singers.

Meh - my problem with Gretsky? He's not lived in Canada or really g=had anything [/U] to do with Canada for years. But that whole 'back of a truck not for for a woman all dressed up' thing - you're joking right? I mean, thy weren't in evening clothes ... come on! PLEASE tell me you're joking! :)

well it would depend 'who' was chosen, thought it might have been Mrs. Fox, wouldn't have wanted to see her standing
up in the back of that truck, but of course if it was a
woman athlete, sure, no sweat, so they had to keep that
cold wet ride in the truck in mind when choosing someone.
and no, please, I'm not joking.

Doesn't matter if he hasn't lived in Canada for years, he's
as canadian as I am, he didn't ask to be traded to l.a.,
and he did marry an american woman, his dad would have been
so proud watching him light the flame, and his kids too I
would think. He owns a canadian junior team, has his own
restaurant in toronto, the rest of his family are here, so
I imagine he is back and forth visiting.

Aside from the absolutely worst version of "Oh Canada" I've ever heard, the opening ceremonies were great. Sarah McLaklin was really great. We didn't have a hundred and eight grand pianos but the light show was terrific. I even liked K.D. Lang.

Yeah, I agree with you about Oh Canada, it was horrible,
but everything else was great, a lot of people went to a
lot of trouble and work and rehersing for many weeks to
bring this to us, and it was amazing.

Juan, you took the words out of my mouth! I really enjoyed the show, except for that arrangement of "Oh Canada"..."Oh God!" Some things just shouldn't be tampered with, and that's one of them.

I liked the guy flying over the prairies...thought that was a highlight. I don't think we had anything to be ashamed of tonight.

Felt sorry for the team from Georgia...I was thinking that perhaps they could have had the minute of silence for that luger right up front, but it worked out OK.

Sarah Mclachlin looked beautiful as always. ;-)

However, I have this feeling that Nelly and Bryan lip-synced their song. I hate that. If you're going to do that, at least make it look like you're trying... geez.

Other than that, it was a great light show. I liked the prairie bit with the kid running while standing still...

Oh, and I liked the spin on Oh Canada... something different. That singer has really got a voice.

From a rating of one to ten it came in as a minus ten.
I blame the Conservative government because they got rid of funding for the arts

I thought the show was good. Didn't like the arrangement of "O Canada" but she sang it well. Wasn't happy that it was Gretzki who lit the flame. Overall it gets an A- from me.

I'm watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and they suck. Visitors to Canada will think we are multilingual in French, aboriginal languages and English. Only in the deluded minds of the govt.

The show of Indians dancing around is dull, so are the totem poles. Some Indians don't even want to be called Canadians. Why are they at centrestage of the Olympics Games?

Tedious.

I was afriad the show would be an embarassment. Much like the show in Turin four years ago.

You are being far too polite. Waste of precious O2 and money is more like it.
I think I would prefer to think of it as an eulogy for the unfortunate athlete that died during practice. That at least might give it some meaning.

The only one who didn't was the Quebec french singer (maybe).

Boy, K.D. Lang must have some serious lip-synching skills then. No, I think they were all siging live. Keep in mind that in such a large venue (big stadium), you can get a very slight delay between the singer's mouth and the sound system. That might account for the appearance of lip-synching. But, I was watching them pretty closely and I don't think any of that was going on.

Absolutely right. All the contortions K.D. Lang went through would have made lip sincing all but impossible.
