Gee, I wish I had access to high-speed Internet so I could become a better authority on stuff.
My experience on this is limited to living in Japan for 6 years and being quite immersed in both the social and business cultures. And discussing this subject - in both English and Japanese - many, many times with many, many Japanese who are both Buddhist and Shinto. And participating in various Shinto and Buddhist events and ceremonies - all the way from new factory openings to weddings & funerals (where the subject of reincarnation came up often). And now having a Japanese-born partner who is a Buddhist and believes in afterlife/coming back/reincarnation, along with her friends, relatives, business associates, and other acquaintances. She'll be returning from an extended visit in Japan soon, and I guess I'll have to inform her that a higher authority has deemed that she and all the others are and have been wrong. I think she'll be shattered to "discover the truth", as laid out by the supreme authority. But, I'll be gentle so that she will be able to see the light and correct her beliefs accordingly.
There is a chance we'll get high-speed here by June, so we can then have access to proper reference materials and get ourselves all straightened out on this and a wide variety of other subjects. It will certainly be a relief to have all the answers right there on the screen without having to actually to do some thinking about them. Right now, the websites that contain all the final answers and solutions to life's mysteries are just too slow to download.
All that waiting just speeds up the process of aging a bit too much.

Glad to help, countryboy. In a debate, the two sides are rarely on an equal footing, only one side has the burden of proof. One side has to provide the proof; the other said can just shoot it down.
The side that has the burden of proof is the side that makes a positive claim (earth goes around the sun, afterlife exists, soul exists etc.).

In Japan Buddhism may be mixed in with Shintoism, countryboy. So Japan may not represent typical Buddhism. Anyway, I have posted one web link which supports my assertion, that Buddhists do not believe in reincarnation as the word is commonly understood.
Now, if you have a contrary link, I would like to see it. At least that will tell us that it is a mater of contention among Buddhists.

I still don't see what 'I commonly understand' mean.
The phrase 'commonly' is similar to 'usually', 'many times' etc. Now, does one really say 'I usually understand', or 'I many times understand' etc.? Either I understand or I don't.
Anyway show me a serious literary reference and I would be convinced.
