Part of the GM restructuring plan showed that the North American content of a Toyota built in Canada was only 5% behind GM, and only 1% behind Chrysler.

The numbers were in the low 80's for percentage, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for that, TenPenny. Yeah, it makes sense when you consider that shipping things like sheet metal, steering wheels, etc. from offshore would very likely build a fair amount of extra cost into the total cost of the car. Comparing quality of the parts really isn't an issue either, as I believe most of the major assemblers rely on the ISO system of ensuring quality from their suppliers.

Got to have the class and the ass to ride a pretigious bike like a harley,, only class
acan pull it off. Otherwise a rice burner or bmw is the way to go,, when you have no taste.
I beat a bmw bike in my car,,, left the sucker eating my dust.... there was no way the wimp could catch me..
I get a laugh at the wannabe tagalongs that try to ride with a bunch of classy harley riders...
Gee people what part of Harley's only do ya'll not get.
lol
Given certain circumstances, I could beat a Harley with a Vespa so it isn't surprising that a car can beat a Bimmer bike in certain circumstances. And that's before considering the driver/rider.
I wasted a 425 horse 427 Vette with my 650 Bonny once, too. Hubby wasted a 454 vette with his '72 CJ5.
I'll take reliability and durability over class, prestige, or taste.
Most Harleys I have seen are too loud, bulky, vibrating, and slow.

You don't think they sends profits back to head office?

I don't know the financial arrangements between Toyota Canada and Toyota HQ, but I suspect that any transfer of money from Canada to Japan would be carried out in the form of a declared dividend. Toyota Canada would have to be in a profitable position to do that, and only after all the other issues - Canadian taxes, all costs and operating expenses, etc. - were paid out.

Toyota HQ would be the "shareholder" of Toyoto Canada, and thus would be entitled to any dividends, but they would also have a vested interest in retaining a certain amount of any profits in Canada for things like plant expansions, upgrades, etc. and that would show up as retained earnings on the subsidiary's balance sheet.

That's a rather skimpy thumbnail sketch of it and I'm not a bean counter, but I think that is generally the way it's done.

I'm getting a little bit confused. Isn't Toyota owned by share holders? Any person in the world (providing he has the price) can buy a share. So are you saying most of the shareholders are in Japan? If so wouldn't it make sense the profits go there? Help me out with this please Countryboy (astute financial wizzard that you are):smile::smile:

Okay; around here, most of the Harley riders fall into either of 2 categories:
thugs / drug dealers , or
past-middle aged men, most with pot bellies, with little hair.

If that's the class you like, hey, who's to argue?

They are too small. I couldn't even fit into one.
I could, which would be one of the reasons why I'd buy one. Les had a rugby coach that drove an Austin Woody. He's 6'10 and weighs 340+.

Me, a financial wizard? Ha, ha...the people I used to work with would get a big kick out of that! I'm not sure of the ownership structure of Toyota, but let me take a peek...shouldn't be too hard to find out. I'm pretty sure they're a publicly traded company, but I don't if the shares are owned in large blocks by a few people or organizations...

It would stand to reason that the majority of shareholders would be in Japan, as that's where they originate, but these days you never know. I wouldn't be surprised if some of their suppliers over there own some blocks of shares, as that is common over there...it has to do with tight company-to-company relationships called "kieretsu" which isn't part of the North American business style.

Depends on the class of shares. Public usually get 2 or 3rd offerings which are a portion of a portion of the ownership and profits.

Legally? Illegally there are loads of places in BC one could have fun with a Ferrari Enzo or a Lambhorgini Diablo GT or even a Cerbera Speed 12.
And they'd even have to resort to road spikes or aircraft to stop you because there'd be nothing else in the cops' repertoire that could do it.

Whoa, bad copy and paste here...will redo it.

Toyota Motor shares are traded on the NYSE under TM-ADR but I'm not sure if that for a U.S. subsidiary...it likely is. I'm into murky waters here...perhaps an expert can enlighten us further on the total ownership picture of Toyota...

Montana on the open highway.

I've driven in Montana (quite a few years ago now) and if I recall there is no posted speed on the open highway, BUT, what there is, is a cross mounted at every fatality site, must have been a hundred of them between Kalispell and LIbby. I think that sunk into my head more than any speed signs.........................:lol::lol::lol:

TOYOTA INDUSTRIES CORP (Japan) is the owner of TOYOTA MOTOR CORP (USA) and you acan take it from there with the banks that have split interest probably have assets in the securities, leasing loans etc....
You could blow up the US arm and never dent the real Toyota.

Yes, legally. There are open areas where you can drive as fast as safety will permit. Which means if you don't have a accident, the police will not bother you. Drive like the wind.
