Haven't all the ones who came back from the dead cleared that one up yet?
You could also use this as an example of what happens on a regular basis every single day.
Re:9:5:
And to them it was given that they should not kill them,
but that they should be tormented five months:
and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion,
when he striketh a man.
Re:9:6:
And in those days shall men seek death,
and shall not find it;
and shall desire to die,
and death shall flee from them.
That is basically pain, sounds a bit worse than a hornet's sting. Take a 'normal day' there. You open you eyes and go about getting ready for another day 'at the office'. In the short time it takes you get ready many painful things have happened to you. Scalding hot showers with many slips and falls, shaving with a straight-blade doesn't go so well either, breakfast has many hot things so there are many burns. The walk to the car leaves time for the family dog to attack you and probably urinate on you after he wins the match. The drive is more like a pinball machine from the perspective of the steel-ball, etc, etc. If that is the first woe then it can also be found in the fiery lake as those are the things Satan & Co like to do. I haven't read any verse that indicate man suddenly becomes the more powerful of the two but it could be that way just to make their time all the more miserable.
What woe #2 and #3 describe is how the rest of your days goes, a long painful day, the end comes when darkness covers your vision for the briefest of moments, and ring goes the alarm for another day of similar things. I'm pretty sure you will have a memory for each second. With some luck you might sleep through the whole thing like Lazarus does.
Lu:16:23:
And in hell he lift up his eyes,
being in torments,
and seeth Abraham afar off,
and Lazarus in his bosom.
So why 1,000 years, the Bible doesn't really say. In that 1,000 years that starts with just believers part of the earth is restored to the same conditions Eden's Garden had.
(The tree of life was planted eastward in Eden) It takes the full 1,000 years to teach those people how to resist what comes when Satan is released at the end of exactly 1,000 years. If no believers were alive for any part of that 1,000 years they would not be strong enough not to show fear when faced with Satan and the fallen angels that are not already in the lake. The reason it doesn't go past the minimum time it gets the ones in hell or in the grave out at the earliest time possible.
Above the lake those things are prevented from happening. You do not feel pain because nothing painful is allowed to happen. (ie you bend over and a bouncing rock goes through the space your head had just occupied. Satan's 3 temptations after Jesus's 40 day fast was food (solution for an immortal being, never get hungry , eating would just be for the taste), safety was Satan's 2nd temptation. Rather than surviving a fall from a high place the fall is just avoided altogether. Flight would seem to require the help of an Angel. Last but not least, power that comes with being the King of a Nation. In an immortal world everybody would come to have their own Nation, a dominion they rule over that is made from the same as what Adam and Eve were given dominion over .
