Not a very scientific poll (only 351 respondents of people that attended or will attend a "tea party" event) but I think that it clearly states that they are overwhelmingly white (87%) *edit*, married, 'well off' and between the ages of 35 to 64 (which in some circles can be described as old). :roll:

What it also tells you is that not all "tea baggers" describe themselves as Republican, there's a large mix of Independents and Libertarians as well.

Now here one has to be careful. No doubt some of them don’t call themselves Republican. But that is because they think that the Republican Party is too moderate, that it is not being conservative enough. So in effect they are Republicans who are disillusioned with Republican Party.

But they are still very much Republicans. Many times these Republicans say that they won’t vote the Republican candidate if he is moderate (like McCain). But what happens is that they get so scared, so spooked by the Democratic candidate, whether it was Gore in 2000, Kerry in 2004 or Obama in 2008, that they turn up and vote for the Republican candidate in droves.

My guess is that most of those who say they are not Republicans end up voting Republican most of the time, whether the candidate is a moderate or a conservative, doesn't matter. Every time they are deathly scared of the Democratic candidate and will vote Republican out of fear, if nothing else.

Indeed they are, Avro. Refer to my pervious post. I wrote that before reading your post, but it can very well apply to your post.

Also, let me give you my take on why tea baggers are white. As I said, before, the reason is simple, they mostly constitute the Republican base, and the republican base is predominantly white, male and old.

The question is why is the Republican base so mad. Again, the answer is simple. They were in power for the past 12 years; they had the congress for 12 years and presidency for 8 years. Many Republican politicians are afraid of the base (and rightly so, these are the people who volunteer at elections, who knock on doors, stuff envelopes etc.). So when the base says ‘jump’, many of them jump.

The upshot of it is that Republican base was used to having its own way for 12 years. All that changed all of a sudden in 2008. Republicans suffered a devastating loss in 2006, but the base at least still had the presidency. All that changed in 2008, now the Republican base has no power whatever in Washington.

And that is why they are mad, they are used to having their own way, they are not used to being out of power. They are acting like a spoiled brat who has finished his candy and there isn’t any more. They are throwing a tantrum.

Quite so, Avro. Michael Steele, chairman of RNC (who is black) has expressed concern over this issue. But his is a lone voice in a sea of right wing demagogues. Republicans really are not interested in attracting black or Hispanic vote. Evidently they don’t understand the changing demographics of USA; they don’t understand that whites soon are going to be in a minority.

No JLM, it is definitely not trolling. Provocative, certainly. But what is wrong with provocative? It is the provocative thread that generates the discussion (a thread extolling the virtues of motherhood and apple pie will be lucky to generate half a dozen posts); I myself try to be provocative many times.

Okay, semantics aside. Fox News shamelessly promoted the 'tea party' protests(Glenn Beck, numero uno) while decrying that news outlets like CNN were too partisan. Hence FNN has earned the moniker of Faux News.

I've found the demos for the viewership of FNN (http://groups.haas.berkeley.edu/marketing/sics/SICS 2008 Papers/ab.pdf page 31) and (no) surprise it is almost, (+/- 2 %) 87% a white viewing audience, the same number given by teapartydemographics.com!

BTW: the USA is about 74% white, not including those pesky Hispanics who are "white" but don't share 'our'/'their' ethnicity.

Long story short, once Fox (et al.) promoted this meaningless protest they attracted about 10% of that additional support from the newly disaffected/newly declared 'Independents' and 'Libertarians' (who previously, probably, couldn't define what either was - but it sounded good).

This isn't a race isssue!

It's a healthy discussion and as long as no one has a racist viewpoint, I'm all for it.

Tea 'partiers' are not all White. Most are as they are paying high taxes to keep the non tea partiers comfy in the indolence they have become accustom to. The Dems fear tea parties so try to disparage them. The message here is blatant racism and leftwing bigotry. It is the same as saying why are non tea partiers Black or Brown? Do Blacks enjoy paying high taxes? I suppose lefties charge Black Tea party goers as being Uncle Toms.

Quite so, JLM. But it does explain the behavior of the tea party attendees rather nicely. When Democrats lose all the power in Washington, it is quite possible that their base may get equally mad.

Really? And just which taxes has Obama raised? The answer is, none. If anything, he has lowered the taxes, as part of the stimulus to avoid the economic meltdown.

And where did you get that boloney? You read it on a far right website perhaps? The fact is, non attendees are white, black, brown, of every color imaginable. A significant portion of whites do not attend the tea parties.

The attendees however, are predominantly white. You are committing a basic fallacy in logic. Most of tea party attendees are white, therefore most whites attend tea party. Sorry, logic doesn’t work that way.
