While I think it was a tad steep, Kessel is only 21 years old. If they had done this trade for a late 20's player, I would be more ticked off. As it stands, I will take a wait-and-see attitude. He could be just what the Leafs needed.

Plus, if the Leafs make the playoffs the picks they gave up will be average at best(next year's draft is apparently weaker than this year's by far).

Kessel is a great player, and will help the leafs for sure, and probably will be
a key player for many years.
I just hate to see those 1st rounders go, and they have lost 2 of them and a 2nd.
Cliff Fletcher started the leafs on their comeback, he made some key changes
before burke arrived, so I hope people don't forget that, and give burke all of
the credit.
They do that concerning anaheim, but it was Brian Murray who was mostly
responsible for that stanley cup winner, with the exception of Pronger and
Neidermeyer, and Neidermeyer wanted to play with his brother, who was
allready there, but the Pronger trade was a good one.

It took the Flyers years to recover from the Lindros acquisition. Putting so much on one player can be risky. What if he blows out a knee or ? Shyt happens. But if Kessel stays healthy and they do light it up this season then all is moot.

These games do mean something. These games could be the difference between staying in the NHL and being relegated to the minors again.;-)

I don't deny that. We just didn't see much of "our stars against their stars" but as Talloola says, "the team does have some depth" that we haven't enjoyed in the recent past.

Edmonton had most of their top players playing lastnight, no Horcoff though, and a couple
of others, but their top scorers were on the ice, and the goalie is suppose to be a very
good young, up and coming star, we'll see.

WIth 47 players remaining on the Vancouver Canucks' roster, head coach Alain Vigneault has dressed a different lineup in all four exhibition games.

The Canucks are undefeated (4-0-0) in the preseason so far, boasting the best record in the League with five games remaining before the start of regular season action.

After playing three straight, Vancouver earned a deserved day off Sunday before getting back on the ice Monday to play host to the Calgary Flames, on the end of their three-game span.

The Flames split their four preseason games (2-2-0) so far and comes into Vancouver with a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers at the Pengrowth Saddledome Sunday night.

Lineups and updates to come following the morning skate at GM Place.

I watched the Calgary Vancouver game last night. The Canucks won the game(5 - 4) in a shoot out to keep their pre-season undefeated streak alive. What was annoying is that they blew a 3 - 0 lead in the manner of earlier Canuck teams that we are trying to forget.

After the fact Juan, I was glad they blew that lead, and I said so at the time,
to my husband, the game was so easy for them in the first period, calgary
was doing nothing, and canucks were accomplished a lot, too easily, then
the second period, the game went very dull and uninspiring. When Calgary
caught up and then went ahead, it also woke the canucks up again, then we
had a hockey game, which was exciting till the end.

I guess we have to give them credit for not giving up. It might have been a different game had Luongo been in the net. What did you think of Cody Hodgson?

I think he will adapt to the NHL just fine, he is so smart and quick thinking on the ice, not the greatest of skaters, but all of his other assets will make up for
that. He had a late start, so is still a little behind others physically, as he had
the back injury which put him on the sidelines for a while.
The one I am dissapointed in is Grabner, here is a player loaded with talent,
is as good a skater as Raymond, but one would never know it, because he is
not showing anything much, he doesn't seem to have the confidence, so maybe
he still needs another year in Manitoba, he is still only 21, and he played
so good in Manitoba, was their best player, and I know that Gillis and Vineault
wanted him to make the team this season, but looks kind of doubtful now,
and there aren't many spots for the taking.

I think maybe it was the Flames who were wearing the potato sacks (burlap). Spade seems to be noticeably absent regarding this game between BC and AB
I'm sure he is an Oilers fan but - Flames are still an AB team.
(BTW SPADE - my Joey (from Cancom) says - what happened to the Oilers the other night and now the Flames have been put out).

I do know that Hogdson is playing with Kesler and Burrows tonight, not sure
who else is in the lineup.
Maybe there will be changes after this game, and some players will be sent
to the Moose, as their training camp has started now.

Nothing ho hum about any of these games, and it is their sixth in a row Juan. San Jose iced a pretty good team, and gave the canucks a real work out, but Vineault changed his
lines around now and then till he had a real solid hard working group out
there who wanted to 'win'. Don't forget he is playing players who are trying
to make this team, canucks have lots of players, so our regular team has not
actually played all together yet. Hodgson was not impressive at all, and I
thought Grabner was a little better, but not good enough, Tanner Glass, who
I only saw for the first time this season, looks really good, and that line was
probably the best for canucks tonight.
Take some time Juan to get to know all of the players, who are new, there
are some good ones, but only a couple of spots to fill on forward, and probably
two on defence, so there is a battle going on against each other to win those
spots.
I can't see how they can let Hodgson make this team, unless he raises his level
of play in a big way over the next three games, so at this point it looks like he will go back to Junior for another year, his skating isn't fast enough, and he
is getting outfought for the puck most of the time, I was really hoping he would
be on the team, but there are other players playing much better. Hansen had a
very strong game.

Hodgson has a pretty nice contract. I don't know if he gets less if he is sent down to the minors or not. He's making more money than a few players on the team like: Hordichuk, Grabner, Glass, Raymond, Hanson, Rypien, and Bombgartner to name a few and he will not likely make the team this year. He's still a hope chest player.
How much do you think the Canucks can get for Cory Schnieder?

Hodgson does make more than some, although I don't think he makes more than
Raymond,(Raymond must be ready to be given new contract, can't remember), and he is playing very well, but Hodgson will make more, on top of his contract, according to 'numbers' that he
reaches, and even though he may not make that extra, it still is part of the cap,
so, keeping on the team does cut into the money more than some.
Bombgartner will be in Manitoba, and I'm sure Glass will be also, but he has
definitely made himself very desireable to the coaches, and probably will be
the first one called up, there just isn't room for him right now, but he will
be playing again tonight, and if he plays like he has, his name will be tossed
around by everyone and he will be a threat to take someones job, if they do not
perform.
They sure don't want to send Hodgson back to juniors, but if he doesn't snap
out of the duldrums he is in right now, they will have no choice.
If they can keep him around, in and out of the lineup, they can send him to
Manitoba next year, going back to juniors will not bring him along, but playing
part time on canucks, and practicing with canucks, will, and he won everything
there was to win in juniors, and if he goes back, I'm sure he will have lost
some enthusiasm, and probably won't play as well as he did last season.
I'm waiting for Sherokov to get back, he was such an exciting young player, then
tweaked his knee, which has kept him out of the lineup, I want to see him play
a couple of games again before the season starts, but don't know if he can.
The team is very deep and the competition for jobs is intense, and that in
itself strengthens the team, and they are now much stronger than they have
been in many years, forwards and defence, and goal.
Schneider had a poor game, last time he played, but his first two games were
great, and he will play one more game, pre season. He needs to play very well
in that game so he can get the back-up position, as he hasn't earned that yet.
If that happens, then his stock will go up considerably, and he needs to play
in the NHL as backup this year, and do well, then he will be a very valuable
commodity, and will bring back a top end player in return.
They play again tonight, a different team again, although hodgson and grabner
will be given another game, and I would think this is grabner's last kick at the
can, he played a little better last night, but seems to need another year in
Manitoba, he is only 21, but you will see some other new players in the lineup
tonight, watch Pierre Cedric Labrie, he is a nice player and Guillaume Desbiens
also.
OK, I'm just going on and on, I'll get off of her now.;-)

Note": Just found out that labrie is off to manitoba, so we won't see him tonight.
9 players cut today, one going to junior team, others to manitoba, scatchard and
petrovicky have been outright released.

Here are the Canuck salaries:

What do you think the Canucks can get for Cory Schnieder?(sp)

Thanks for that site Juan, have not seen that before.
I explained above what I think Cory Schneider 'will' be worth, depending on
his performance, and they could get a pretty good trade for him right now
too, but I think they should keep him around till he is 'more' valuable, and
to let him go now leaves them a little vulnerable, one injury can change
the whole goaltending situation, and one of them will be in Manitoba this
season.

I would imagine Mason Raymond's contract must be approaching a point of renewing, as it is obvious he hasn't been given a raise, and the way he has
started this season, at training camp, he has taken a big step forward in maturity
and talent, and is learning how to use his great skills positively, he seems to be on
the way to a good season.
