It also customary in Canada to offer the host a sleeping bag as you are greeted at the door; and if they don't accept it you should remove your shoes, slip on the sleeping bag and hop around the house as if you're in a potato sack race.

If you don't do that they'll look at you like you're strange.

ha ha! Somehow i don't think I'll be wanting a sleep over!

"I don't drink" should be all any host/hostess ever needs to hear. Lying shouldn't be necessary.

Karrie I've already told her via email that I do not drink and she told me not to be silly of course I'll be drinking her wine, but I won't be. I'll just hand some wine to her son to put in the fridge for me.

The man of the house owns and sells fine wines from all over the world apparently including many NZ wines amd I believe they have hand picked some fab wines for my visit but alas as I mentioned to them I don't drink. Maybe they thought I was joking!

I'm sure it will work out just fine ..

Thank you SJP, that is great advice! I wonder what medical condition I can drum up (lol)

If she asks you what medical condition, she is definitely snooping. She should not ask that unless she knows you very well. But again, perhaps a vague answer might be appropriate, like ‘the doctor isn’t sure yet, but he asked me not to drink to be on the safe side’ etc.

Or perhaps you could say that you have an allergy to alcohol, that should end the discussion right there. Or perhaps you could tell her that you are a Mormon! Then your religion forbids alcohol.

Kiwi, if you give the non alcoholic wine to the hostess and it is served along with other, alcoholic drinks, I don’t see a problem here. But even if you don’t take a non alcoholic drink with you, surely the hostess should offer you a non alcoholic beverage if you don’t drink alcohol.

And if she says to you don’t be silly (when you decline the wine), the most polite way out of it would be to tell her that you have a medical condition that makes it unsafe for you to drink alcohol.
:roll:Around here, people just say they don't drink alcohol.

LOL Karrie,

My daughter did warn me that the lady of the house is 100% menopausal and lethal and not easy to get on with and many people have apologised for her behaviour, so we shall See, ! ha! I won't be getting p*ssed and I will take a long a game or two to play to loosen her up, she'll be my buddy by the end of the night. If she is menopausal god help me! lmao... I'm sure it will be fine, I've met many an unpleasant person who are just unpleasant for the hell of it...
Compliments and smiles work like a charm for me. :D

SJP

You have such a polite gentlemanly matter of fact manner about you coupled with a very intelligent knowledgeable mind.

Thank you :)

Send them here. Wifey loves Aussie/Kiwi wines. Shiraz in particular.

Good evening all....just getting ready for bed and thought I'd jump on to see what was happening in the forum!
I wouldn't have a hard time telling people that I don't drink. If you want you could always say you have allergies. That will be enough for them not to ask why.
I hope you have a wonderful trip kiwi_NZ!

LOL ... Yes, I did say that to her already... My daughter tells me she is very controlling in every manner...

I think just being firm about the fact that you don't drink makes more sense than lying about health problems, etc. Even the most controlling host won't pin you down and dump wine down your throat with a funnel. lol.

Tell her you stopped drinking because after one or two you usually become violent. Fist fights and sometimes bludgeoning.
