The Capitals need a goaltender. Varlamov has had his moments but he's inconsistent, and the Pens have too much talent on their roster to give them weakness. Ovechkin (10G, 7A in the playoffs) and Crosby (9G, 7A in the playoffs) have been outstanding: neither one deserves to lose this series, its a shame one will (I think it will be Ovie for the lack of support from the rest of the Caps). The winning goal was a lucky bounce but that's part of hockey, just as posts and crossbars are.

Vancouver... what can you say? They played with fire again. To beat the 'Hawks you need to play 60 minutes not 35 or 40. Calgary did this with Chicago too and we all know where the Flames are now...

Varlamov is a 21 year old rookie goaltender. I think he will be fine. He is the reason they even got to the second round, so deserves to keep playing.

yes, that's true, and who knows how this will play out, but there is one thing
I have noticed, and that is, chicago have learned lots in this series, as they
aren't so reckless now, are playing a better balanced game, but we have the
better goalie, and your'e right, if we had played 60 minute games, we would
have won this by now, but it seems that we can't find a way to do that.
One blazing flaw we have too. We are not scoring on our 'big chances', and
we had those last night, and I don't think chicago would have missed those,
that shows the better 'individual' players they have, who make their shots count
when they get 'wide open' chances.
We scored in two chances that should not have been goals, sundin's shot, should
have been saved, and the one wellwood passed to the center, pin balled all over
the place, 'lucky goal', but the blatent chances we had, we couldn't put it home,
made their goalie look good.
I'm not even going to listen to any of the sport shows tomorrow, cause I'm
really tired of all the 'chit chat', it swings back and forth with every game,
trash talking the team, then planning the parade, it's tiring, and I'm done
with it.
I'll watch tomorrows game though, and hope for the best, but chicago has
all the momentum now, and has gained lots of confidence, which they
really didn't have at the beginning, especially wondering how they would
score on Luongo, well, that is gone now.
If chicago have the discipline to play a two way game, and don't get too
excited 'because they could win it tomorrow,' then they should win, but
that isn't easy to do, with a very young team like theirs.

(This should make talloola very happy.;-))

Detroit won 4-1 today and are now one victory away from knocking off Anaheim. It really is amazing how Anaheim had the chance to put the knockout blow to Detroit, but they weathered the storm and have looked great the past two games. Detroit is getting scary again.

2-0 for Boston right now. I hope they can keep it up and beat Carolina tonight(and the series too!).

Yes, Detroit is becoming very much like they were last year and Anaheim is
beginning to wilt under the pressure. Yeah, that does make me happy, but
lets see how anaheim play the next game, hope it's their last.
Boston played awsome today, made carolina look ordinary, maybe because they
were fighting elimination, they came to life.

Boston played like last night like they should have the three games before. They need to maintain the same intensity or they are gone.

No team has jumped right out of the starting gate and taken hold of a series, and yeah I know canucks swept the first series, but those were tough games,
and we didn't know the outcome till very late in the games.
Detroit seems to be doing it at the moment, but it still could swing the other
way.

Boston jumped out right of the gate against Montreal. The injuries the Habs had helped that along. I think if Montreal had given Boston more of a challenge that the Carolina/Boston series would play out a lot differently than it already has.

today at 6 p.m. CBC from chicago

He was the hero for the Canucks in their first round series win and tonight, with his team facing elimination, the Canucks could definitely use some of those heroics again from Alex Burrows. After scoring three goals in the first round series against the Blues – including two in the deciding Game 4 – the 6’1”, 190 lbs. left winger has gone completely off the radar so far in the second round series against the Blackhawks. The 28-year old has managed just one point in this series, an assist on a Ryan Johnson empty net goal way back in Game 1, and none in the last four games.

The Pincourt, Quebec native has had a small history of helping his team staving off elimination. His first career playoff goal was the tying marker on May 3, 2007 against the Anaheim Ducks in a game that saw the Canucks down 3-1 in the series. The goal allowed the Canucks to force the contest to double overtime before they were ultimately eliminated by the Ducks. In 20 career playoff games, Burrows has recorded five points (4-1-5) and 34 penalty minutes.

Don't have a clue how this game will go, but canucks have handed the hawks
lots of confidence, and made it clear that they can be had, and the worrisome
side of the hawks game is gone, they believe in themselves now, and we have
to find some 'scoring', it has dried up.
Burrows has to keep his mouth shut, and 'just' play hockey, kesler has to find
his brain, as he lost it in the last game, the twins have to stop cycling and
agressively drive for the net, we have to draw some penalties by being more
agressive offensively.
Our defense and goalkeeping will get the job done, it is the offense who needs
to step up. They are making habbibullen (sp?), look good, he hasn't got much
to do.

I have a good feeling about tonight, Canucks are historically achievers when their backs are right against the wall, came back twice from 3/1 against both Cgy. and Winnipeg years ago.

but, this is now, not years ago, completely different team, has nothing to do
with calgary or winnipeg.
we have to get the first goal, like we have in most games.
we will have to play better, than we have been, as chicago are playing better
than they were, they have improved throughout this series, we haven't.
If we do look like we have the game under control, we have to play the
last period under control, and don't lose our 'brains' as we did last game.
Who is going to score for us tonight, any suggestions?

I was close. Now is not the time to say I told you so. I just want to point it out.

You can look back at the top of p42 of this thread to see my picks :p I'm 1 for 1 so far but awfully nervous about Boston and Pittsburgh (less so about Detroit)...

I feel for the Canuck fans right now but they should be proud:its been a good run and they played some exciting hockey. They definately didn't back into the post season the way the Flames or Habs ended up doing and this series could have gone either way. The extra home games won't hurt the club's bottom line and ability to sign some FAs in the off season either.

Game results were not surprising to me, but the score was. They played Chicago's
game tonight, not a good idea, trading goal for goal isn't a good way for canucks
to play with a very talented offensive team such as chicago.
Luongo could have been better, but I will not put the blame on him, or anyone for
that matter, chicago forces the game to go their way, unless you play very defensive against them, so, for next season, we will have to upgrade the team,
which I'm sure Gillis will do, and go for it again.
We did better than was predicted at the beginning of the season, so that is good.
The team has a solid base, but needs improvement, and that is coming.
Cory Schneider in Manitoba was voted the 'most valuable player' in all of the AHL,
and he will be a very good goalie in the NHL, and I wonder how Gillis will handle
that, as he can't come up and play back up for Luongo, he is not a back-up, so
it will be interesting to watch how gillis handles that situation.
It is Luongo's last season coming up, he must sign or be traded, so???
Cody Hodgson has gone to manitoba for the remainder of their playoffs, and
he will make the canucks this fall, and be a nice addition, he was voted the most
valuable player in Ontario Jr. League this season, but their team was eliminated
the other day, from playoffs, by the Windsor Spitfires.
Sundin actually had a good game tonight, and it was good to see O'Brian get
his first goal of the season on the last day of the season, and a nice one at that.

Good season for the canucks.

If detroit and chicago meet, I will pull for Detroit.

Washington won tonight, so game 7 in washington.

In my view, Luongo will take some heat for this series, and rightfully so. You can put anyone in net and have a low goals against average if 5 guys constantly box everyone out and block shots. Sooner or later the team has to open up and get some goals, and when they do the guy making the big bucks in goal has to stop something significant. The team in front of him today played about as good as possible. Even Sundin came through. This game result wasn't isolated in this series. He didn't look very good in any game.

If the only way they can win is to try and trap all game long and stop shots from reaching the net then why bother paying a goalie 7 million dollars?
