Hey Bear, hope you don't mind if I borrow your title for this thread;-)

DHS warns of 'right-wing extremists' - Andy Barr - POLITICO.com

A new Department of Homeland Security report is warning law enforcement officials of a growing threat of “right-wing extremist groups.”

“The consequences of a prolonged economic downturn — including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability to obtain credit — could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities,” the report warns.

The report explains that threats so far have been “largely rhetorical,” but points to the April 4 shooting of three police officers in Pittsburgh as a “recent example of potential violence associated with right-wing extremism.”

The document points to both the economic downturn and election of President Barack Obama as potential recruitment tools for militant groups.

“Many right-wing extremists are antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues, including immigration and citizenship, the expansion of social programs to minorities, and restrictions on firearms ownership and use,” it reads.

The report also highlights anger directed at illegal immigrants and perceived threats from foreign countries as potential recruiting pitches from the groups.

The department is especially concerned with attempts to “radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”

“The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today,” the report reads.

Throughout the document comparisons are made to the 1990s, a period when the country was rocked by several acts of domestic terrorism including the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

“Paralleling the current national climate, right-wing extremists during the 1990s exploited a variety of social issues and political themes to increase group visibility and recruit new members,” the report reads. “During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the number of domestic right-wing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks, and infrastructure sectors.”
Just beware the extremists in general!

This is actually a hot topic on Talk Radio on some shows. The idea of Homeland Security singling out Right Wing NOW that we have a Liberal/Left Wing President. The idea of focusing on returning veterans as potential threats is not taking very well among Conservatives. I do not have any numbers but callers were upset that the Obama administration is releasing this report in this manner.

Are they focusing on returning vets ... or the KKK/skinhead/rabid evangelics?

I figured it probably would be. The idea has merit though doesn't it? It makes more logical sense that extremist right wing groups would represent a larger threat with a liberal President, doesn't it? I don't read it as a slight against conservatives, just for those that embrace the fringe nonsense.

With the recent messaging and framing of some conservative minded folks, like Glenn Beck's meltdown, or Chuck Norris and his statements, it's not a surprise to me that DHS would be interested in what kind of threats these represent.

Weren't there some environmentalists under surveillance a few years ago in your neck of the woods? I thought it was somewhere in New England.

The landscape has changed...

The landscape has changed, but the the smoldering hate on the far right is very evident. It's a pity, but the spillover is present here in Canada. They cry "patriotism" to cloak their anger. I have very little patience for their "arguments."

it looks like they are focusing on the white supremist and militia movements. But adding that newly discharged vets are at risk and will be or are being recruited by them.

We patriots are going to apply the Patriot Act against those subversive right wingers.

Kinda ironic: the far right insisted on that law. Now it will be applied against them!!

Some of this may explain why there is a sudden shortage of both firearms and ammunition on the sporting goods store shelves. In my area of the US there is a fear that a Autocracy may emerge similar to the 1935 German model. The US military is retraining entire 3 rd Division Brigades for civil unrest and disobedience right now. Then the trained units are to be assigned to areas where the trouble is expected to occur. This is all pre-Obama and was a Bush plan. Several FEMA camps opened for forest fire relief for those burned out remained opened until after the inauguration and I suspect the reason was to be have a base of support if needed for the troops. The trouble never materialized but this confirms there still is a plan in effect for the eventuality it may in the future. There are several well organized armed right wing organizations present in the US but they keep a low profile.

Sometimes they're right!

They are never right. Seems that the extreme left is afraid of people who can and wil defend themselves. Sometimes talking it out and walking away just will not work. (along with time outs and other indecisive actions)

Do they call themselves Brownshirts or Sturmabteilung?

Those would be the Democrats and Liberals. They are being called the new Brownshirts. We all remember Obama's call for a new Civillian Defense Force.

How SS of him!
