There could easily be stores and industries where peopel could work as little or as much as they wanted/needed where hours are traded for goods produced or other necessities bought and sold at near cost.

Not in any sense.

It was written in the grammatical imperative, so it is a command just as a mother saying Eat! to her child would be a command to him to eat, laying down the law if you will.

As a command, it is intended to be obeyed, obviously. Though as a spirital command, it's intended to be obeyed willingly, unlike government laws granted.

It's not a law.

Right wingers always claim that the USA is a Christian nation under the divine laws of the Bible. According to them, the Bible's laws must be faithfully adhered to. Yet, when confronted with that book's actual teachings, most of these far right professing Christians throw it out the window!

If someone is willing to pick through garbage for empty bottles or stand for hours panhandling to buy a burger and a bottle of wine wouldn't it be better to give them a broom and push cart to clean for a couple hours so they can eat and get loaded? But no bottle til ya eat your burger.

As has been said more times than I care to count, if you people insist on commenting on what the bible says or doesn't say, you really need to take the time to read it and understand it.

The quote you refer to was not a command. It was a lesson about a greedy man.

By definition, a person who isn't greedy helps his neighbour willingly, without need to be told. That man was blinded by riches, and so was told, and he walked away. Unlike legal laws, he has the option of ignoring it. In that sense you're right, it's not a law as such.

Old Age people & homes

It is really heart-wrenching to see the plight of our elders in society. Even their
children are neither bothered nor cared for them. Though it is not too common at the moment in Canada since cultured countries like India face the same problem and run different charities. The main reason behind the problem is the present-day social fabric of the world and Indians too are following their western counterparts after attaining a certain status in society.

The sadness in the eyes of the people who live at old age homes is heart-touching to see. Even in the caregiver canada (Welcome to Canadian Caregivers Assocation!!) where I am a member, you can see kit of old age people abandoned by family.

......All that money and stuff you were going to give to charity........!

Well, just send it to me instead.

I promise I'll pass it around to the less fortunate.8O

Many years ago, we took a vow of poverty.

Well, sort of. I mean, we were ratsh@t poor, so why not take the vow.

Seriously, aside from giving to the food bank and a good organizations like the Sally Ann, (who really know how to help people at a very basic level), there's not a whole
lot the average guy can do.

Poverty is omnipresent, and is going to remain so. It must appeal to those in power, or else it would be changed. My spidy senses say someone is making a bundle off poverty, or keeping a bundle by not changing the way society works.

So, we trundle off some stuff to the food bank, and make monthly donations to the Salvation Army, and hope it will do some good. Aside from that, we try to live our lives.

But, there's a price to pay for everything, and soon we'll be building bigger prisons, and bringing the troops home from Afghanistan to help control riots in the streets.

Wait for it.

What are your ideas?

Three choices isn't very enlightening. To answer properly you would have to know who they are and how they got that way. Sometimes it's laziness, sometimes it's addictions, sometimes it's bad luck, sometimes it's poor money managements skills, sometimes it's sickness, sometimes it's from making bad decisions. So the best way to help them is to determine their strengths and weaknesses and deal with them accordingly. Giving them money is seldom helpful, but lending them money (if they are trustworthy) may solve their problems, just too many potential variables to know.

The poor don't need stinking permanent charity to sooth the consciences of the timid and they don't need a ****ing handup they need to get the filthy rich off thier backs once and forever. As long as there is a privilaged class there will be needy and there will be poverty and there will be ignorance these are the life support systems of the monstrous wealthy who have and will perpetuate misery as long as the type remains common in the species.

There's a few of the rich who are as you say, but there are also a few rich people who got that way through studying hard, working hard and spending money wisely. I think everyone should strive to be rich (in an honest manner) Everyone is better off, as they spend money in the community and hire people. Anyone who says the rich don't pay their fair share of taxes hasn't studied the tax tables, not to mention having "a dog in a manger" attitude. If you notice, the poor people pay the lowest tax rates. I believe in the rich subsidizing the poor (up to a limit), but there is a limit.

Taxes are for slaves we will accept nothing but the wealth of equality. It's indicative of lax criticle thinking that many of us falsely believe that the rich are good for the economy and that they contribute to it while simultaneously raping and looting it. How is it that you actually believe the rich subsidize the poor. That could never be farther from the truth now than it has ever been. Just the exact opposite is true, that the poor subsidize the rich and the poorer they are the richer the wealthy live.
Just curious, JLM, you seem to begrudge the poor thier low tax rate. How about collecting body parts in lieu of increased taxes. But for you JLM we will spare all the honest rich we find.

" Just curious, JLM, you seem to begrudge the poor thier low tax rate."- I just reread what I wrote and I can't find any statement alluding to that. Is your problem poor reading skills or hallucinating?
