Even if it is, that doesn’t help Harper all that much. The population is still concentrated in Ontario and Quebec. That is why any politician must appease Ontario and Quebec if he wants to get elected (he can safely ignore Alberta, usually Liberals ignore Alberta and conservatives take it for granted).

So if Harper is remembered in Ontario and Quebec in a negative manner, that means his overall standing is all shot to Hell. Being remembered fondly in Alberta isn’t enough. I assume any conservative (even Mulroney) is remembered fondly in Alberta.

And yes, Trudeau is universally respected and admired in Ontario and Quebec.

The population is heavy in Ontario & Quebec. Canada is
more than Ontario & Quebec though, last I heard. I think
that is the basic premise for the argument against Harper,
and Trudeau.

I think part of the reason that the Conservatives get elected,
is that people outside of Quebec & Ontario would like a voice
in governing their futures too, on occassion.

Mt_pockets1000, I thought of even a more striking example, California. California used to be reliable Republican state. It voted twice for Nixon, then for Ford, then twice for Reagan, then once for Bush.

But in 1992 there were enough immigrants (mostly Hispanics) to turn the state around from reliably Republican to reliably Democratic. It has consistently voted Democratic since 1992.

In the 70s when I lived in USA, a prominent Republican, Hayakawa, defeated the incumbent senator in California, John Tunney. After that Hayakawa was California Senator for a long time.

But I think he was the last Republican from California. California has not had a Republican senator for a long time now.
Maybe no republican senators, but what is their great govener Arnie?
And how did the populus vote on the same sex marriage initiative in the last election?

he brought down a document, that gave some people more rights- a lot of the wrong people in my view.

Indeed, JLM. He gave rights to minorities. Now, those may be wrong people in your opinion (women working outside home, gays etc.), but to me, they are not. They deserve fully as many rights as heterosexual white males (like you or I) and I for one, am proud that Trudeau guaranteed equal rights to minorities such as blacks, gays and women, through the Charter of Rights (easily the best document of its kind, certainly far superior to the American Bill of Rights).

No, like it or not, Trudeau will forever will be remembered fondly for giving us the Charter.

That is all well and good but you are missing the important examples for instance abused child or woman vs. pedophile/rapist, the latters get all the protection whereas the onus is on the victim to prove the harm done to them and then when (usually a short time later) the perpetrator is released he is often place in a location that is kept secret to the victim. Those aren't civil rights, they are WRONGS favouring the UNCIVIL.

He squandered $millions switching over to metric

JLM, another great achievement by Trudeau. I had forgotten that one, thanks for reminding me.

Hey, almost 40 years later we still aren't completely metric, as you will quickly realize if you deal a lot at your hardware store or lumber yard. Football fields are still measured in yards not metres. At you medical clinic feet, inches and pounds are still in use.

Yeah ... but it took an out-of-gas airplane to get them to figure out the difference between pounds and kilos of jet fuel....

Really what medical clinic or hospital ?

Just got back from my doctors and my Dad just got released from hospital and everything was metric. Has been for years and medical clinics love it.. Unless you have a real old doctor, other centres generally all use metric.

As much as I don't agree with anything political in the west, I don't want to see a sudden migration of easterners out here. BC is already over populated in my opinion. I think we should have at least one province that allows wildlife to have their share of the land base. Humans are just too stupid to appreciate wild places. All they can see is the monetary value of the natural world. BTW, I'm working on a way to arm the wild animals to shoot bipeds on sight.

Sir Joseph Porter

Man ....( I almost called you a fruitcake)...you live in a strange universe .

Sorry China, but I have already declared a victory over you, I have nothing further to say to you.

I suggest you join Sir Joseph Porter fan club, of which Cannuck is a charter member. My fan club follows me everywhere, like a poodle, hangs on to my every word and posts a response. Cannuck has been doing that until now, I suggest you join him.

It is quite flattering really to know that I am that important, I make such a difference to peoples’ lives, that they hang on to my every word and post a response to it.

So welcome to the SJP fan club. You are the second member. I expect to see you in my entourage, along with Cannuck. From now on for my every post, I expect to see a response from you, along with one by Cannuck. Don’t’ expect a response from me, of course.

Incidentally, it may interest you to know that in canada.com forum, there was a SRM (SirRupertMargartroyd) fan club. I think it had 4 or 5 members. It is really flattering to know that I am that important.

Gee, JP.... What flavour piddle did you dump in China's chop suey?

Lone Wolf, China has joined the SJP fan club (of which Cannuck is charter member). My fan club hangs on to my every word and posts a response. My fan club, my entourage follows me everywhere, like a poodle.

It is quite amusing and flattering really. It gives me a good feeling that I give meaning to peoples’ empty lives.

Ron, that is the problem, isn’t it? Any PM popular in the east is not likely to be popular in the west, and vice versa. I think there have been very few PMs who have been popular nationwide. There probably isn’t any way to square the circle. In Canada regional differences are very prominent (as opposed to USA).

But the winning strategy still is to appease Ontario and Quebec, and to ignore Alberta, both for Liberal and Conservative politicians. That is just a geopolitical reality

Ron, I think part of the reason conservatives get elected is that people get tired with a prolonged Liberal rule, they get bored seeing the same faces in the news year after year. They forget the mismanagement and the chaos of conservative days and vote conservative. Usually they realize their mistake in a few years and give Liberals another prolonged rule.

Then they get bored, tired with Liberals, vote in conservatives, and the whole madness starts over again.

Arnie is a RNIO (Republican In Name only), he is actually more liberal than many democrats. Republicans in general are deeply dissatisfied with Arnie.

As to gay marriage, California is part of USA and as such is much more conservative than Canada. Don't compare California with Ontario or Quebec.

Sure, we are not completely converted, JLM. But these things take time, old attitudes die hard. In another generation we probably will be fully Metric. Or if not, we will have made our piece and learned to live with some British units.

Incidentally, in medicine they don’t use feet, inches and pounds (maybe some old doctors do), but kilograms and centimeters.

Correct Sir Francis. I posted my post before reading yours.
