You need to read a little history.

First of all, the that whites killed 100 million Amerindians in some genocidal orgy is ludicrous. Not that they behaved well, and not that the Church did not support murder, especially in South america........but you have exaggerated to an immense extent.

In the 15th century, there were probably 120 million inhabitants of the Americas.......By 1550, there were about 12 million....but what killed them was disease (mostly measles, to which they had no resistence). Yes, whites, especially the Spanish, engaged in grande wholesale murder, often supported by priests, but it was a priest (de la Casas: google him) that stepped up to the plate and devoted his life to the defense of natives. No one else bothered. In addition, the Jesuits were created to convert, and to protect native peoples......sometimes even against their own Church (see the movie The Mission, it is accurate to the smallest detail on the history....)

50,000 dead in Anglican schools???? From what???? Got a link?

Probably disease.....and I doubt very much 50,000.

As for the witch hunts, they were carried out almost exclusively by secular authorities....yep, that's right.......

As a comparison, I would say that Christians, alone and when brought together in a church, have done many times more good than evil.......

At the time of the salem witch trials there were no such thing as secular authorities. They were all church going bible thumpers. And then there was the Spanish Inquisition which was essentially genocide carried out by the Catholic church. The trail of tears, a crude attempt at genocide by christian government. If the government authorities believe in god and go to church they are not secular, but just an enforcement arm of the church.

Just remember that for every misgiving brought on by christians, just as much has been brought by all of the other major religons people unfairly compare christianity too...

People shouldnt be too occupied with trivial topics such as this

You're probably right. All major religions are equally responsible. No one major religion can wash its hands among the innocent.

So what you really posting is not a defence, but a justification/rationalization

As for the comparisons. Christians are outnumbered 3-1 in this world, so based on that logic for every person killed by a non-christian there have been 3 killed by christians?

Thanks for that info

Christianity is so far from the teachings it purports to observe, it boggles the mind! Just before launching the Iraq War, Bush spoke to a conference of religious broadcasters outlining his intent to attack unilaterally. He received a standing ovation. Go figure!
I have seen you report on the percentages of people who attend church once a week in Canada. From the research I did, while many polls suggest that the figure for the USA is around 40%, others say this is wrong. They say about 40% claim to go to church but the actual figure is close to between about 18 - 19 %. That would certainly lower the amount of christians believing in and supporting the war effort. I don't know if the site I found will work but for what it's worth -

I was raised a catholic but I was saved. You too can be saved. I used to write a column in a Nelson paper that gave hope to ex-Catholics that there was indeed life after Catholicism. There is also life after religion.

I also fail to see how you can say you are a free thinker when you seem so caught up in dogma.

Cliffy - Religious or not everyone has an image of heaven. What is yours?

Being reborn. In some future lifetime we evolve and will not need to come back into physical form with all its inherent illnesses and built in obsolescence.

By the way, did someone die or are you under duress? Is that why you are flying you avatar upside down?

Iam a catholic yes, i jump to defend my catholic brothers when the heat is turned on, yes.

I do consider myself a free thinker cause i like to look at both sides of the story, like i encouraged in a previous post in this thread. I like to freely think there are two sides to each story.

When someone comes on here and generalizes one religous group (like the original poster) thats not free thinking. On the other hand if someone religous like iam were to come along and say this

Just remember that for every misgiving brought on by christians, just as much has been brought by all of the other major religons people unfairly compare christianity to.

thats free thinking, im not letting a news article tell me what to believe, im not letting my religous beliefs get in the way of your beleifs, im not caught in a dogma beleif that my religon is superior to anyones.

Compared to most athiests i think ive handled myself more politely and proffesionally

A Catholic support group. What a great idea. Like AA.

"Hello, my name is Cliff and I am a Catholic.
"I would like to make the following confession. On Sundays, around 11:00 am, I get an uncontrollable urge to cross myself, run to the nearest church, sniff incense, and search for weapons of mass instruction. I know I'm weak; I need your help to overcome these temptations and stay in bed!"
