What system of Government doesn't have an elite minority (from the whole population) that is 'supported' by a much poorer majority (from the whole population).
The old USSR had the leaders living the same lifestyle as any leader from the west, including any so called 'royals'.

One thing for sure is that if the Yanks were not next door like they are, the Ruskys would be eyeing Canada like a wolf looking at its next catch.

Who said wolf? Who said catch?
Have you forgotten Georgia and the Ukraine, Socrates? We've got lots of catches to make close to home, before we turn to Canada, so you can have a couple of peaceful years yet.

Are you quite sure you know what you are asking for?:p

Quite sure. I have seen what you look like, and am quite confident that I would be treated humanely.

And is Putin, the current leader any different. He was after all head of the KGB before becoming Russia's leader.
From what I have seen of Putin and what he has said `it will not be long before the USSR re-emerges.`

Was Bush I connected to the CIA?

That would make him privy to some interesting (to us) material, so what?

Daddy was very involved with the CIA and was not a good participant.
I agree, so what.

Russia has already emerged. I think if the USSR returns then they will begin another downward spiral. It took awhile for them to get back on track and I think they realize they do not need to be RED to be strong.

Obama better be careful. Negotiating and talking is fine but giving in too much can be a show of weakness. Being too eager to talk can be a show of weakness.

Think of it as two guys who are constantly squaring off or sparring. Now one guy suddenly wants to talk it out. It can be construed as weakness.

Not picking a fight, but it's gonna be hard to do anything that doesn't fit your standard of a "sign of weakness: given the outright belligerence the Bush admin displayed towards most of the globe

Anything short of "do what we tell ya, or we'll git ya" will sound weak lol

Oh and as for your example- what if one of the original guys was a pigheaded arsehole, and the second guy shows up and acknowledges this and asks that they actually try to work stuff out rather than bandying threats?? The Bush admins policies have made many more folks turn away, IF the US can somehow regain a tiny shred of "honest broker" status, maybe some of the folks who have been meeting veiled threats with veiled threats will cease feeling threatened and be able to have an actual dialogue

It would be nice if things could be worked out that way. Used to be, but that's history now.
