JLM what are you getting at here. I never said that."Bringing any child in the world that mother doesn’t want is wrong."- OH, who's opinion would that be? A mother who has children through adoption?
F-bombs? Cool. I had baked beans with my meatloaf tonight. Anyone want a war?
My grandson was born around 22-23 weeks. 3 months premature. He has cerebral palsy. He is a tad behind other kids his age. He will never walk and at the moment he only has partial use of his hands. He talks but he has a high palate so sometimes he is difficult to understand - especially for strangers. He goes to school even though he is on a modified program. He fully understands what is going on around him and he doesn't like to be left out. He starts grade 7 in September. He brings major joy to our family along with his brother and sister and his cousins. I'm taking him and his brother and sister camping in the morning. Wheelchair and all. I expect we'll have a great time. He loves the pool so we'll go swimming. Not all children are as lucky as him and not all parents/grandparents are as lucky as we are. He weighed only 2 pounds, 1 ounce on his birthdate. His little fingers were so tiny he didn't even cover in his Dad's thumb when he held it in those first few weeks. He's been through some terrible times and he has more to go through but - we hope that the final result will be all up hill from here.In gestational weeks, how far beyond that 22 week for viability? Remember, this was in 1936 under bush conditions.

Why is this an issue? It really shouldn't be. If you are against it, don't get an abortion. But don't walk around trying to tell people what they can and can not do with their own bodies. My sperm is filled with DNA, and all it requires me to do is not pull out...but i do...does that make me some sort of abortion doctor? This issue is a personal one and that is the bottom line. We live in a free society, where people have rights, the right to try to have a baby, and the right to not have a baby. And sorry, but just because you have a beliefe, you can't impose it one everyone else.
Besides, aren't you people more concerned about the thousands who are dead from a fake an unjust war, men who are proven "human", who can talk who have worked hard and given up everything to their country. Instread you are pissed off about someone being allowed to cancel last nights drunken mistake? Sanctity of life is complete and utter bull ****. Look at what your government (mostly american) does on a daily basis. So far almost 1million civilions have been killed in Iraq. Goood ol' sanctity of life.
Because people need to realize that on this issue there can be no debate. Its is not your place to tell a woman what she can and can not do with their body. And there also seems to be this notion that it is a normal procedure that people just do. It is a huge decision that is never taken lightly by any woman. I'm just tired of religious groups (in this case its not 100% religious groups but it is the majority) telling people what they can and can not do. Reproduction is personal. If I ejaculate into a rag I am killing potential life. The sperm is alive, it has an agenda, it has dna, it is destined to be human. It merely has to reach the egg. But it still isnt a human yet, there are still more processes to go through. So if abortion is wrong (in the early stages), im also wrong for having sex with a condom or masturbating because i am denying POTENTIAL life.
)VanIsle- S.J. made that statement in post #221. I get the impression he feels the "mother's rights" supercede all other considerations. My opinion differs slightly in that I question that right where the mother and fetus are healthy.

National Abortion Federation: Women Who Have Abortions
In the United States, about 6 million women become pregnant per year.2
Each year, nearly 1.2 million American women have an abortion to end a pregnancy.3
The most common reasons women consider abortion are:
In the United States, 9 out of 10 abortions are performed in the first 12 weeks (first trimester) of pregnancy. Most of these are done within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy.3
- Birth control (contraceptive) failure. Over half of all women who have an abortion used a contraceptive method during the month they became pregnant.3
- Inability to support or care for a child.
- To end an unwanted pregnancy.
- To prevent the birth of a child with birth defects or severe medical problems. Such defects are often unknown until routine second-trimester tests are done.
- Pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.
- Physical or mental conditions that endanger the woman's health if the pregnancy is continued.
Very few abortions are done after 16 weeks of pregnancy. But some women have to delay abortions because they have trouble with paying for, finding, or traveling to an abortion specialist.
Illegal abortion
Some states have legal restrictions on abortion. Many states require women to wait 24 hours or longer after a first informational appointment. Contact your closest Planned Parenthood or other family planning clinic for more information about restrictions in your state and neighboring states.
An abortion performed without professional medical care (illegally) has a much greater risk of complications than one performed legally with good medical care.
Teen pregnancy
About 30% of pregnant teens choose to have an abortion.4 About 60% of women under age 18 who have an abortion have a parent who knows of the abortion, and the majority of these parents support their daughters' decisions.4 (In the United States, some states require a parent's consent for women under the age of 18 before they can have an abortion. But in these states a minor has the right to seek a court order allowing an abortion without a parent's consent. For more information, contact your closest Planned Parenthood or other family planning clinic.)
The most common reasons that teens and young women choose to have an abortion include:4
- Awareness that they are not mature enough to have children.
- Knowledge that they are financially not able to support or care for children.
- Concern that having a baby would change their lives and compromise their (and a child's) future. Many young mothers don't ever manage to get the education and employment necessary to raise their children above the poverty line.
I agree pretty much. Except for the rape part. There's always adoption. I can imagine there are those that would adopt in spite of the child being the offspring of a rapist. People adopt kids that are severely disabled.)
If there is risk to the Mother (and I don't know in most cases how anyone would know that right up to birth time) I suppose termination may have to happen. If it is known right away that the fetus is gravely ill then I believe the pregnancy should be terminated. Again - if the mother has been raped and feels she cannot handle raising the child or caring the child she should not have to. If a woman has simply been careless, it is up to her to carry her child to term.
Wrong,on so many levels. I am not telling a woman what she can do with her body. She is free to do what she wants with that, but, if she choses to have sex and then get's pregnant, I am saying she does not have the right to kill that baby. Once she is pregnant we are not talking about just HER body, but are talking about a baby's life also.
Why is her "comfort" more important than anothers life?

1. I'm opposed to unjust wars too.
2. The rights argument goes both ways. Should a baby lose its right to life just because society believes that the mother reserves the right to terminate it? So what about the baby who could be born any day? Do we reserve the right to reach in and snap its neck because the mother doesn't want it? What's the difference between that and after he's born?
