They have a job fair in lethbridge and were advertising electricians starting rate is $51.00/hr
They also will pay part of your mortgage if you move there and have huge retention bonuses if you stay.
You can make about 3 times the money you would working in the elk valley coal mines doing the same type of job.

Won't this just drive consumers' prices to an unsustainable level?

Transient worker programs the foot in the door and now we will see foreigners taking
prominent jobs in this country and they will feature a wage race to the bottom.
It is time to stand up and demand Canada For Canadians.
Not just in the jobs field but in business, manufacturing, access to energy and so on,
I have nothing against people coming here and becoming Canadians, and having
access to jobs, but foreign nationals should have a vetting system when it comes to
the jobs market.

Wage race to the bottom is something people need to keep in mind.

Sign up now and get free black lung.

Silicosis from the rock dust will kill you long before the coal dust will.Silica fibres once embedded in the lungs are there for life.
Someone has to keep china running and allmost all of their coal go's to china.
Spent way too many years of my life at the line creek mine, glad i'm outta there.

If there are two jobs for one person which will the person take?
One guy sits in the pickup or fuel truck or water truck or whatever. Some people just drive around and hit the smoke pits.Theres people there that do nothing and when a job calls for x amount of guys it's usually way too many.
Theres so much money flying around at just suncor that it kind of feeds on itelf now and is bloated with so many people that dont do anything.

Depends on the person, the jobs, the demographics, the security, the future prospects of the jobs, the pension plan and the pay.
Is Lethbridge paradise? What does it take to attract somone with skills to Lethbridge?

I know very little about downtown Lethbridge, I was there once 50 years ago. I would think a family could get established there and find most of the amenities but the wage earner might want to know what the future of the company is for the long term.

There must be something wrong with Lethbridge if employers need to offer $10hr above the going rate.

Lethbridge is south of Calgary and they held the job fair there and in Fernie and Cranbrook B.C.
Fort crack is a 14 hour drive from Lethbridge which is a very nice smaller city.

Lure from anywhere. Ft Crack isn't he only place in the west that has jobs.

No but perhaps it has a good "inventory" of skills that are needed in Lethbridge. Actually, I'm just trying to argue hypothetically, I don't know f*ck all about the situation.

No but it's where most go,lots of guys from my hometown work there that spent 25 years in the coalmines and were top 10 seniority. They work 6 on and 6 off and spend 2 of the days off on the road.
Most of CNRL top managers all came from the elk valley.Lots of these coal mines were owned by oil companys at one time so theres a connection still with Shell.

At least you don't have a fixation on Ft Crack. With less and less quallified skill people it takes that extra $10 an hour to lure to place like Lethbridge. How many young men and women in western Canada are chomping at the bit to live and work in Lethbridge?
