Oh I'm sure the shareholders and CEO did alright.
The more I see popular trends arise and pockets being filled, the more I want to market frozen toast.

The answer:

No one buys the crap. Makes you wonder where all the greenies are in supporting this planet-saving technology
Nothing says green more than a $10K set of panels that will take my clock radio off grid.

I was kinda hoping that the 5 figures that I paid for my panels would at least be capable of operating my toaster such that I could enjoy some delicious pre-packaged, frozen toast.

Frozen toast lasts much much longer than old fashioned regular toast and it reheats in just 2 minutes in your toaster.

And that has what to do with them folding?

Ya. So?

If someone had a crystal ball and could see into the future with certainty, well that would be great. But nobody does. At the time, this company was doing very well, and was attracting significant investments from the market. Market conditions change. $hitty for the investors, but that's the risk of investing in a leading edge tech company. $hitty for tax payers too, but there's always going to be risk of failure, and there are benefits to government giving incentives for investment. Jobs for one. It wasn't the fact that the government invested money that caused this to happen.

Was it the best use of funds? When the programs have run their course, I'd like to see the costs versus benefits. There's a far bigger picture than just the failures. But I guess that's not the political fashion...
Loc already took care of that.
Did he? He made this about Obama. Well the grant came from Bush, and the tax credits issued under Obama's DOE were never used by this company.

I'd think nothing of all this, if this was one company.

But this has become a trend.

I smell something.

All the more reason for an audit of the programs. I don't know how many companies are involved in the various programs, but I think it's a safe bet that there are more we haven't heard of than those that we have.

Yeah...the company spokesperson said...anywho, if they didn't spent an approved tax credit at all, good for them then...the fact they were chosen (stimulus) to get that little green pat on the head speaks for itself...nevermind that they are owned by a bigger green giant Cogentrix and ultimately by Goldman-Sachs.

If it all comes out clean, they get their pass. ;-)

It's still a green fail.

Estimating U.S. Government Subsidies to Energy Sources

The federal government provided substantially larger subsidies to fossil fuels than to renewables. Subsidies to fossil fuels—a mature, developed industry that has enjoyed government support for many years—totaled approximately $72 billion over the study period, representing a direct cost to taxpayers.

Enough said for those who claim renewables are overfunded, the real objection they have to funding green energy is it takes away from the billions already going into subsidizing a mature technology that supposedly can stand on its own.

What a scam.

How the hell do you fail when you have a product and marketing scheme that hoses people with a 500% mark-up?

Let a bureaucrat ruin it for a few days.

Then why did you quote it? That is hardly a reliable or objective source. BTW tax credits are NOT a subsidy as opposed to outright cash grants to many of the so called green projects.

Hmm, in 2010 they won a best practice award Frost & Sullivan Presents the 2010 Excellence in Best Practices Awards

The company had raised about $130 million in venture capital.

Oh, and Locutus, the $15.6 million loan was actually given in 2007....that's a Bush Administration grant.

As you were.

You know sometimes it's okay to criticize something you support as a whole..

Yeah that's it exactly. Cause we all want to pay more for fuel as the supply dwindles. How about we stop throwing money at initiatives that don't work and put it into ones that do. Maybe get rid of all those useless wind generators that cost so much and consider thermal.

There's a huge amount of hypocrisy going on here, there is no sector that has such political or economic control that the fossil fuel sector does, it's about as close to a water monoploy as you can get and yet the people who want to find more sustainable, socially responsible, healthy and economically diverse ways to provide energy are somehow in the wrong?

You don't have to any further than this site to understand the meaning of complacency when it comes to a viable future, economically, socially and eventually in terms of species(ours) survival. People are engaged in the effort to provide sustainable energy for a lot of reasons, only one of which is profit.

On the other hand profit is the only thing that seems to drive an energy sector that will remove entire mountains:

Seriously pollute crucial bodies of water:

Deepwater Horizon oil spill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tear up vast stretches of wilderness while drawing down and polluting vital watersheds:

Oil sands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And spilling oil all over the place all the time:

Third oil spill fuels calls for Alberta pipeline review - The Globe and Mail

It's one of the most bizarre situations that people that vehemently defend such practices as necessary are also fanatical about attacking anything that will replace them.

If we want the world to eventually end up looking like Mordor from Lord of the Rings then we're going about it the right way.

If we mounted the wind generators in the parliament buildings they would work like a charm.
The money would be much better spent developing a non polluting coal fired generator.

how do we tell the difference, the whole time that some of us are trying to find viable alternatives the current owners of most of the market are doing everything they can to stop them.

There isn't going to be one magical technology that will replace fossil fuels(although Thorium liquid reactors could eventually come close), it's going to be a new much more flexible system of production and consumption that will create a new sustainable energy model.
And that requires foresight and a concerted effort across many levels of government, industry and society as a whole. How do you do that when we have people in very important positions still denyng there's even an issue.

Of course things like this fail, they're essentially programmed to.

taxslave, if you're posting to me you're wasting your time, after that comment about wanting to shoot me I couldn't give a rats ass what you think.
