I hate to rain on everyone's party - being so upset I don't like Lavigne....

In my own defense I got an Associate Degree from the Conservatory of Toronto when I was seventeen... practiced with jazz groups for fun (never professionally) around Vancouver - my mentor was a older guy named Fraser MacPherson - who organized many groups in B.C. and back east - and who has since departed... Vancouver was home to many small groups of locally grown musicians and I had the privilege of knowing many of the good people.

Fortunately for me I had great talent to compare myself to and realized I would never gain the fame these people would do...but learning from them...especially the appreciation of music which I still have with me which will last my lifetime.

Doc - sorry - you had to learn the truth about me sooner than later eh?

Juan will abet your willingness to perpetuate this as he cannot stand any criticism of anything Canadian - even bad performers.... but I'm used to it.

It doesn't work both ways - anything and everything can be written here against the U.S. but don't touch Canada.....

Such hypersensitivity.... Pick someone worthy and I'll write pages of homage...

Gotta go get lunch....

Curiosity, clearly your dislike for Avril Lavigne stems from your lack of taste. Avril writes tunes that bring tears to me eyes, I want to be her boi friend. haha.

Ghandi could take lessons from her for crying out loud

uhm..why would Ghandi need to learn to spit at the papperazzi? Or salute a crowd by raising his middle finger? Hmmm?

Avril is Avril...she is worse then alot and better then some. She deserves no special treatement unless she is handicappable....?

Curio, what do you think of Amy Winehouse?

You are wrong there. As I said in my post, I have no idea what she sounds like. Until I googled for her picture I hadn't a clue what she looked like. Like her or hate her. It doesn't matter to me. It very likely doesn't matter to the singer either. Musical likes or dislikes are a matter of personal taste.....to each his/her own.

Funny, the number two pick. I didn't even know who he was until I looked him up. If this is a sign younger Canadians are getting involved in their history, I'm all for it.

My biggest problem with Trudeau is what he could have done and what he didn't do. All the tweedledum and tweedledee governments before Pierre whined that minority governments hands were tied by their situation. Trudeau had a sizable majority and he really didn't do anything with it except piss off Albertans and bring the constitution home.

Juan, Trudeau reinvented the country. It's his country now. "Two nations warring in the bosom of a single state" was given a thrashing and perhaps one they deserved but now we have the potential for many nations warring in our bosom as multiculturalism, Trudeau's biggest legacy, becomes rooted. He's an extremely controversial prime minister. Those that denigrate that declaration simply aren't in touch with the street.

The worst Canadian is probably some faceless SOB we've never heard about - someone petty and mean, likely a bureaucrat maybe long dead or doing their damage as we speak.

Lists of the best and the worst are really just a measure of fame.

I first saw Trudeau as a Godsend when he won the Liberal leadership balloting. I was mesmerized by his talk of a "just society". The Diefenbaker/Pearson years were finally behind us. We were finally going to get the leader we all wanted. Boy were we fooled. Like I said, the difference between what he could have done and what he did was massive. He was no serial killer but he sure disappointed a lot of people.

So, Doc, you'd wanna hear about the time I worked with Lavigne for a week, I'd imagine?

I sorta liked her music and thought she was a cute little pixie, then I met her, and was repulsed by her mall-rat narcissism, her cynical sneer at anyone else's initiative, and her petty, selfish, demanding nature.

Oh, and BTW, as a live performer - she sucks hard enough to pull the moon in to a closer orbit. Her band, and the sound guy's vocal processing, totally carry her.

Shadow

What has a nationality to do with lousy musicians? Music is borderless.

There are tons of groups here I think are terrible - it has nothing to do with Canada's musicians - they grow some great musicians up there.

Again, it isn't Lavigne's looks, it isn't the songs she 'sings', she is a lousy musician.

Hey it's my opinion, don't get in a twist over it. You want me to lie and say I think she is great when I think she sucks? Try Door Number Three...

You wanna get patriotic about it - I think Britain has put out the best world class mucians in the world.... from the sixties with their "Invasion" until the present day.

Er...two things Curiosity.

One. I was commenting on you being American because I thought you were Canadian. For some reason, I thought the symbol of yours was the Canadian flag, not the American one. So, my comments have nothing to do with your nationality, musicians' nationality, or anyone's nationality. I don't know where you got that from my comments.

Two. I am joking about Avril. You do not like the way she sounds. I get that. The reason I made my comments about Avril is because I knew that our fellow member, DocDred, was a huge fan. I never, once, said that you had to like her.

I am not trying to sound pissy, but I do not like it when people insinuate that I am saying something when I was not.

I am not going to linger on this like certain other members are wont to, but I want you to know that I appreciate your opinions, and I enjoy reading your posts. I hope that this post of mine does not cause any friction between us, and I hope that we can continue to have fun posts(like before).:-(

If you meant the post that I am quoting in jest, then I apologize, and will eat a whole bunch of humble pies.

Peace?

Sorry Shadow - I see the confusion in that whole sequence... I just can't imagine anyone who knows music who would like Lavigne's style(?) I hope this will clear up the misunderstanding...
I appreciate that you wrote to me about this - and hope there are no bad feelings ... not from me anyway.... I am always getting caught in some kind of trouble for my banshee ways....

I am/was Canadian and last April took my US citizenship - having lived down here for just under 20 years.

I post on Canadian forums because I get lots of feedback about Canada these days, and try to keep up with the current issues going on - and yes the flag is confusing but I started using it in April - prior to that I never used a flag at all.

I didn't think Doc would mind if I thought his fav was a failure.... as Juan points out - everyone likes her.... or the masses do..... whereas I guess I listen for real music ability than what the kids currently think is 'hot'.... when it's not. I am usually in the minority about musicians anyway.... people rarely get what I hear in them. For a couple years in 2001,2,3, I was collecting eveyrthing Norah Jones wrote or sang... people thought her dull. I thought she was primo. But that's me.

Can't think of any current favorites I have there are so many but I think the U.K. artists have kept true to musical ability and knowledge if any country has produced a majority - but I think there are great artists from all over the world.

Anyway - music should be loved on an individual basis.... and I shouldn't have included Avril in the worst Canadian category - I think Canada deserves to have real people posted - who have done a great damage to the nation as a whole. A bit down the ladder Trudeau was mentioned and he will always be my pick when I am being serious. He fractured Canada in far too many ways the ramifications of which are still being dealt with.

To me - Avril isn't worthy enough to be up there with the truly magnificant bastards....she's just a speck.
