A woman’s severed head has been found in a Mississauga park near where a severed foot was discovered, Peel police said this afternoon.

The remains “are not small,” indicating that they likely came from the body of an adult, Peel Regional Police Det. Randy Cowan told reporters during a noon-hour briefing at the scene.

DNA tests are underway to match the body parts, although, Cowan said, “Common sense tells us this is most likely related.”

“Without a cause of death we can't call it homicide, but certainly foul play — there's definitely something amiss,” Cowan said.

The head was found near the Credit River, which runs through Hewick Meadows Park, near Eglinton Ave. and Mississauga Rd.

The latest finding was made at noon Thursday, about a kilometre upstream from the site of a severed foot found by hikers the day before.

The foot likely belongs to a female because the toes were brightly coloured with yellow nail polish, Cowan said earlier Thursday.
“It’s a grim discovery any time we get these calls. It’s certainly disturbing,” said Cowan.

The right foot, severed at the ankle, was floating near the riverbank, when the passersby spotted it.

Judging from its condition, Cowan said, the foot was likely detached “fairly recently.”

“There may be a reasonable explanation of some sort,” Cowan said.

Police can't yet say if the body parts were placed there or were transported there by the water from some other point in the river, which flows from headwaters above the Niagara Escarpment to Lake Ontario.

The remains were sent to forensic anthropologists to determine the age and sex of the body.

A large-scale search of the park — a popular destination for hiking, fishing and dog walking — is underway and expected to last for some time.

“We’ll be looking for the entire victim,” Cowan said.

Ontario Provincial Police helicopters were dispatched in addition to the marine unit and cadaver dogs on hand to search the river and surrounding parkland.

“We're looking for anybody that has seen anything suspicious within the last couple of weeks,” Cowan said.

“We're also looking for people to be vigilant in the area if they're out walking and they happen to find something that causes them concern to give us a call.”

Officers are sifting through missing person's reports, in case any have a link to the body parts, Cowan said.

“Typically in the region there are always a number of outstanding missing people,” he said. “The majority of those return safely...We are going through those reports right now, reaching out to family members.”

Peel police have discovered both a left and right hand in Hewick Meadows Park this afternoon.
They believe they may have located more parts further downstream within the last 20 minutes. Police divers continue to search at this time, while the forensic unit has been called in to help with identification of the new find.
This follows yesterday's discovery of a foot with yellow nail polish and a severed head. Police believe the victim to be a female.
The first hand was found near the area of the foot, the other a greater distance away.
Calling it a 'bizarre' case, Sgt. Pete Brandwood said there are not any distinguishing features on the body parts to help in their identification. He says their priority is to identify the victim, and to help provide closure for the family. Search crews, including 30 to 50 officers, cadaver dogs and the marine unit, are now focusing on the east side of the park.
The hands have been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto.
Police are asking anyone who has seen something unusual in the area to call them.

Police say more evidence found in last hour

Police investigators discovered severed left and right hands in Hewick Meadows Park today.
Meanwhile, they're sending a forensics team to examine another unidentified piece of evidence found further downstream that could be critical to cracking the case.
"Within the last 10-15 minutes, we have found some other evidence and/or information which may be critical to this case," Peel Regional Police Sgt. Peter Brandwood told a press conference just after 3 p.m. at the park where a severed foot and a severed head were discovered earlier this week.
"It's possible that it is body parts but I can't confirm that it is," Brandwood said. "Our forensics team is on the way to determine exactly what it is."
One hand was discovered on the banks of the Credit River, not far from where the foot was initially spotted by hikers late Wednesday morning.
The other hand was discovered "some distance" downstream to the south.
While saying that police cannot label the case a murder until they have a cause of death, Brandwood said foul play is definitely involved.
"The likelihood that the body parts are from the same person is pretty high," he said. "That's not evidentiary but that's more of a common sense thing."
Brandwood said he's not aware of any distinguishing markings on the hands "such as the yellow toe nail polish that was found on the foot," that might provide a clue.
The police spokesman urged residents to report anything they see near the river that might be unusual, such as pieces of clothing.
"If you're walking down the Credit River and you see something, leave it and notify the police and we will come and seize it," he said. "You never know what piece of evidence might be crucial."
Police "are casting a net in every direction," by following up missing persons investigations here and in nearby jurisdictions.
The search of the park, which involved sniffer dogs, police divers and more than two dozen officers will continue until it's dark.
Police will follow up every lead they are given, Brandwood said.
"This is someone's mother or sister or aunt or daughter," he said, "who has unfortunately met with foul play. It's our priority to make sure the victim's family has closure in this case."

it looks like we have another rocco luka magnotta. :(

I doubt the person who did this is anything like Luka. He did it for the attention and for sick thrills, and sent the body parts to places where they couldn't help but be found. Heck, the sick **** made a video of the dismemberment and posted it online! In this case, however, the person disposed of the body parts probably hoping that they wouldn't be discovered, or at least not discovered until a positive ID would be impossible to make. I hope they find the person responsible for it.

That would be a gruesome discovery for sure! Cutting open a fish you caught and then finding some bits of a person in it(fish do nibble on dead people after all)!8O

To be honest, my comment was sincere. I remember watching a show about it, and they mentioned that fish will nibble on the flesh once it's been in the water for a while.

That being said, I'll still gladly try some of that plank Salmon.:)

They have determined the body parts are from the same person and who she is.
The problem with keeping this front and center once the ID has been made is
that it gives the perp a charge and it promotes copy cats so the cycle of murder
continues. I would like to see it handled this way

We have a body or body parts and they have now been identified as so and so.
Then nothing. that is until they capture the guilty party and that would be handled
as such

Today police arrested their prime suspect in the dismembered body case and that
person will be facing charges and a trial in the future.

Then NOTHING Idiots who are looking for notoriety would get no publicity at all
and that would slow some of this down. Perps are looking for front page coverage
to make them feel important if that doesn't happen their is less gain for them
Turn the Cameras and the Mikes off.
