CTV is reporting that Trump is agitating about the current negotiations , saying again that NAFTA is the worst deal for the us. and other Trump language comments ( on Twitter of course ) Is voicing threats to tear it up.

what do folks her e think are tho odds of him tearing it up and creating even more chaos between the three nations??

Anyway you slice it.......the bloke is a wrecking ball.that goes ballistic via twitter.

Hard to tell which trump content comes close to becoming factual......his WORDS ON Twitter, hIS WORDS VIA TELEPROMPTER, OR HIS CHAOTIC VERBAL RAMBLINGS AT HIS RALLIES.

mE THINKS HE IS GOING TO TRY AND TRASH NAFTA

In the renegotiation of NAFTA, the mad POTUS has opened the negotiations with the last, end of the line, do-or-die negotiating position of the US, which is "we're gonna quit". I guess that the "Art of the Deal" guy is really full of shit. I wonder who ghost wrote that for him? He sure is an incompetent negotiator.

If we make a demand to abolish the trade deal before Trump then we can waiver it in 6 months time when it becomes much harder because of elections to properly renegotiate. And then the next window is in a long time. ;).

Basically give Trump the run arround:)

Beat him at his own game

indeed. and Trump IS f***g NUTS. He is not 'negotiating" he is dictating. His way or no way. is not a negotiating tactic. From what we have seen so far not sure he knows much about negotiating. at all. He probably paid someone to do that for him during his so called business yrs.............and write the book for him.... all he did is provide the name. (such as it is)

He is already suggesting that Mexico and Canada are being hard to deal with. So by threatening to pull out of NAFTA he is admitting that he does not have the negotiating skills to handle the process effectively. The process has barely started. His juvenile impatience is evident as well.

The usual hot air negotiation tactics of the Dumpster. I expect any attempt to cancel NAFTA would get him an enormous amount of negative feedback from the thousands of US companies that are locked into NAFTA.

Of course it is a tactic. A hard line tactic.
And since he won't be sitting at the table, no need to worry about him. It will be solved
by a group of faceless bureaucrats who don't care about you at all.

I'm guessing you haven't done a lot of professional negotiating in your life.

Would you be suggesting that his tactics are effective and constructive ?? Is using Twitter to state your negotiating tactic and making it so public professional?? How do these public statements facilitate the real negotiations??

Just as important: how is this "negotiating from a position of strength??

How much difference is there between these "tactics" and bullying??

Why are you so worried if you say the guy has no clue what he's doing? Just relax then :)

Exactly.

Nothing to worry about, except OB breaking into the talks ala Hawkeye, and berating Trump for being a meanie. :)

OB, you have never done business with the unions or the mob have you?
(or faced the type of challenges Trump AND the PEOPLE of the US face right now)

He will tear it up but he better save it for TP because after that the US won't be getting any of Canada's forestry products. Cheers!

Hasn't helped the softwood lumber.

The US is the biggest market. And because it is convenient we have not seriously looked for other markets for our goods. That my dear is a position of strength.

In all likelihood there will be modest adjustments. Trump has shown that he lacks the attention span or intelligence to deal with the details.

Indeed. Plus He sure LOVES using ATTENTION seeking tactics ;-) Perhaps the concept of "professionalism " is quite different under Trump. Intelligent , strategic creative and even aggressive tactics are par for the course in negotiations. But a degree of professionalism is also imperative. Otherwise the process degrades to something less than civilized.Suspect that all three parties have talented and skilled negotiators at this process. So why not leave the task to the negotiators and stop blabbing about it on Twitter?? Why play your hand in public??It seems counter productive. Of course the question remains whether Trump even goes along with the negotiations and their outcomes. His impetuous behavior can ignore all the work the negotiators do. and do what HE wants anyhow. There is a pattern of that conduct now.
