Will Mark Carney (as an unelected PM) have a seat in Parliament?

Ok, sort of a serious question here, with the intent of being serious, but it’s hard to take it serious….

Freeland is going to lose out to Mark Carney, who is Trudeau’s pick, & lots of the Trudeau cult (from cabinet ministers to backbenchers) are going to back him, ‘cuz it’s 2015-ish or something.😉

So Mark Carney is going to become the next liberal leader, & by default, He’s going to be the Prime Minister at least for a while.

He won’t be elected though, & not hold a seat in parliament. Here’s where my question comes in to play.

Does Carney automatically get to sit in Parliament?

Does he automatically get a seat, though not an elected one representing any riding? Does he have to bring a chair from home? A nice one from his kitchen table set, or a folding one from his garage?

Parliament is 338 seats, plus 5 “after” the next election because they’re expanding it to 343. That’s the number of chairs on the floor in the House of Commons. There’s even one specifically for the PM, but that’s assuming that they’ve won a riding…as it would be one of the 338 seats before the next election or one of the 343 seats after the next election.

You don’t have to be an elected MP to be the Prime Minister…under Canada’s Westminster parliamentary system, Canadians do not actually vote for prime ministers the way Americans vote for presidents. Instead, the leader of the party that forms government is who becomes the prime minister…but do you have to be an elected MP (Member of Parliament) to actually have a seat in Parliament???

I know this might sound like a really crazy question above, but it’s a real question. It’s not like the Prime Minister gets two chairs in parliament….One because he’s won his riding, & Another one because his party selected him to be the leader and thus the Prime Minister.

The PM gets one chair, & it’s one of the 338 (currently) matching the number of ridings in Canada….its not 338 AND a chair for the PM…but it’s 338 (one for each riding) and the Prime Minister sits in one of those seats.

If they do wheel in a chair from an office, so Mark Carney can sit in the aisle or something, would he, as an unelected person in Parliament, have the same rights as the actual “Members of Parliament” while in parliament???

Representation in the House of Commons is based on geographical divisions called electoral districts, also known as ridings. At the federal level, the number of electoral districts is established through rules (the “representation formula”) set out in the Constitution Act, 1867. There are 338 electoral districts, each with a corresponding seat in the House of Commons.

I have looked for this answer to this scenario that we are going to be facing, and I’m not easily finding an answer. For all I know, Mark Carney, as not actually being a “Member of Parliament,” might have to sit (as the PM) up in the public gallery on his own lawn chair.

Anyone wanna take a stab at answering this one?

Usually in this situation a member from a safe riding announces retirement allowing the nominee to run in a by election . It might be somewhat different this time .where is the safe seat .

At this point in time, is there a “safe” Liberal seat?

???? Carney does claim he’s from Alberta/Canada/Ireland/England/Europe. Maybe that one dude (mailbox guy) in Alberta will surrender his seat???? Maybe if they still had a seat, one of the Randy’s might make space for Carney?

A brave warning and some big words, especially for those 14-year-old Liberal Party members who are poised to choose our new prime minister. Carney may look like a grown-up from where you’re sitting but his track record speaks otherwise.

Mark Carney's footwear raises eyebrows on campaign trail
'Trying to be a normal guy playing hockey in $2000 shoes,' Pierre Poilievre wrote

These shoes weren’t made for campaigning.

While Liberal leadership front-runner Mark Carney is running a campaign to address Canada’s high cost of living, among other things, he’s believed to be wearing Zegna sneakers costing just over $2,000 on the campaign trail.

The designer footwear, listed online for $2,030, are thought to be the shoes Carney wore while playing hockey during a campaign stop in Ottawa on Sunday when he was endorsed by Ottawa South MP David McGuinty.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre noted the footwear in a post on X, writing, “Trying to be a normal guy playing hockey in $2000 shoes. He’s Just Like Justin.”

Social media reaction to the Carney footwear was mostly negative, though some did question if the footwear worn by the leadership hopeful were indeed the Zegna ones. The Sun has reached out to Carney’s camp for a response.

One user commented of Carney, “He is a status shopper for that feeling of superiority,” while another person wrote: “For perspective, that is almost three months income for a disabled Canadian.”

More users responded with such comments as “That’s a lot of dough for a pair of shoes!” and “Food prices no problem for him.”

The extensive coast to coast search for a new Liberal leader resulted in Freeland and Carney. It's Ottawa's idea of regional representation.

Carney is now taking credit for the work of Judge WIllard Estey. Yep, apparently Carney thinks he's the one who "saved" Canada from the 2008 financial crisis. He did nothing. Well, he did lower interest rates but so did pretty much every other central bank at the time.
I mean holy shit, they even got Jon Stewart to gush all over Carney about how he remembers Carney saving Canada from the crisis back in 2008.

“I remember you from 2008,” he said. “And I truly mean this. Your work in helping Canada get through the economic crisis of 2008, the financial crisis that hit this country terribly, and I thought made a lot of really painful decisions for the people of this country, I thought Canada avoided the worst of that, and I believe you played a strong role in that.” Carney responded, “We di…_ I mean, thank you.”

Fuck off with the disinformation campaign, Jon.

Canadian banks were flush and scooped up a shitload of failed US bank assets for sub par US pennies on the dollar, unemployment extremely low, oil booming, gold and silver swung upwards.

The "damage" to Canada was Union pensions that tanked because they invested in US instead of Canada.

There is a very interesting list of companies that were deemed to be "too big to fail" and were given all kinds of breaks. Prem Watsa being one and if you ever want to see an Order of Canada recipient lie check out his testimony related to Resolute Forest Products.

$400 is not out of line for quality boots these days. More if they are custom fitted.
