I doubt Trump planned for this. I think he's just economically illiterate to a degree. I think he understands the value of trade, just not to the degree a POTUS should.

I think he may be verbally illiterate more than economically illiterate. He's not stupid! He knows once Trudeau sees his stance (body language) weaken He's got him. Trump is a sheep in wolves clothing.

The relatively low value of the Canadian dollar against the Greenback is and has been our secret weapon in trade with the US for a couple of generations, now. It works in our favor when we export but discourages importing from the US.

That's what Trump seems to not understand. He can raise tariffs against Canada all he wants, but that just pushes our dollar down relative to the USD. How does that help US exports?

Unfortunately, Freeland seems to have misunderstood this too. By countering with our own tariffs, we just decelerate the inevitable drop in the Canadian dollar. When the David of Canada is fighting the Goliath of the US, we need every advantage at our disposal, and the biggest one at our disposal is to let the CAD float.

Alternate Unemployment Charts

The seasonally-adjusted SGS Alternate Unemployment Rate reflects current unemployment reporting methodology adjusted for SGS-estimated long-term discouraged workers, who were defined out of official existence in 1994. That estimate is added to the BLS estimate of U-6 unemployment, which includes short-term discouraged workers.

The U-3 unemployment rate is the monthly headline number. The U-6 unemployment rate is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) broadest unemployment measure, including short-term discouraged and other marginally-attached workers as well as those forced to work part-time because they cannot find full-time employment.

Somehow I suspect that other statisticians are going to dispute your source.
