apparently there will be a line of people handing it off to the last one.. Wayne, Arnie are in the line.. they never made the final cut..roflmao

I heard Micheal Buble is the final handoff....
Arnie did his bit this morning so he's done. They state that Gretzky will not be the one. What they say is that only 4 people plus the torch bearer know who it will be and that if word gets out before time, they will switch people. They also state that they want it to be a major surprize and to symbolize the games as never before. Numerous stars are in Vancouver. Jan Arden carried the torch last night. Since we have yet to see Rick Hansen take an open part in this part of the Olympics, I think there is a very good chance he will be involved with the final handoff. They did also state that there are many rumours around the water coolers saying that there will be a hologram of Terry Fox and that when it is displayed, his Mother will light the torch. She was supposed to carry the torch in Coquitlam yesterday but was not there so I guess that could be a possibility as she would not have it twice.

Steve Fonyo, to make up for all the cruelty and abuse he had to put up with, just because he dared to accomplish what Terry Fox - in all fairness, NOT because of anything under his control - could not.

EVERYTHING that that man got in trouble for was completely in his control.

How much will Canada pay for the Olimpdick snow? Yes Canadians are buying snow. I will never laugh at eskimo refridgerator jokes again.

Snow is being trucked from manning park to cypress bowl,
so I guess canada is buying snow from itself.
The truck drivers are doing well by it.

"Lightfoot or Ian Tyson. Saw them both on TV not too long ago. They have been super hard on themselves. Holy dissipated, batman!!!"

So, you think that it should be a talented entertainer?

The how about REAL talent like Ben Hepner, Richard Margison or Tracy Dahl?

It occurred to me that perhaps they might have the voice of the Olympics light the torch... Donald Sutherland.

The opening ceremonies are about more than just the athletics though, so, while I agree with you Risus, it doesn't mean it's the way they'll do it.

I truly hope they have the class to hold a moment of silence today though.

That would be class, and I hope it happens, too.

All the way from Manning Park! Un-believable. That's only about 40 miles from my little hometown and it's one heck of a long way from Vancouver. I think this is getting to be like the lottery tickets I buy - my son says "Mom you might as well just take a twenty dollar bill and light a match to it" and that's what the "income" from the Olympics will be. At least the money is staying in the province.

Yeah, the whole charade is getting beyond ridiculous. The people who dreamt up Whistler and Cypress should have their heads looked at. There are much better spots in the Interior where it should have been held. Rossland and Princeton would be a couple of good choices, if it was held in Princeton they wouldn't be trucking snow. These towns up here could use the economic boost, Vancouver sure as hell doesn't need it. People up here are going to be getting bled dry, while the Howe St. buffoons prosper. Not to throw any cold water on it, I hope the people who have been bled dry to see it enjoy it.

do you think should light the torch at the Olympic Opening Ceremony?

and why :)

The closest one to the torch who has a match or lighter, because unless he's particularly incompetent, he if mot likely in the position to light it most efficiently with the least amount of time wasted.

I think they should go out on the street and pick an ordinary person, at random, and ask him/her to do it. To me, that would help to demonstrate that the games are open to all, and it would certainly make the torch lighter's day! One of those "15 minutes of fame" things.

The costly fanfare of the Olympics has gotten on my nerves a bit in the last few years...

What?! But that would make it out like the games are for all to enjoy? Shame on you for such an idea. We need to reserve the spot for the creme de la creme of society who have it all already, just so they can have even more.

What a disappointment! They put it out there that it would not be Gretzky. It just seemed to turn into a bad day all around didn't it? The death of the Luge athlete made everyone very sad so in the end, I guess it really doesn't matter who lit it.

the risk of death and injury is always lingering around
during dangerous activities like luge, skiing, etc. etc.,
it didn't turn the day bad, it is very sad indeed, but
once they recognize the tragedy, deal with it, the games
go on, that is just the way it is, and always will be.
It might just make many realize how dangerous many of
these sports are, these people who take part in them,
love it, and love the 'danger', and 'speed', they take
the risks, and sometimes it doesn't work out.

As far as gretzky being the torch bearer, I was a little surprised, but
enjoyed him, and he seemed to enjoy himself as well, it was good.

Yeah, I would rather it had been Rick Hanson.
