Whisky down the drain: Scottish workers flush thousands of litres of booze | Appetizer | Life | National Post

The creator of the world’s most prestigious whisky, James Chivas, must have been spinning in his grave on Thursday as thousands of litres of precious whisky were accidentally flushed away at a Chivas Brothers production plant in Scotland.

The whisky was somehow mistaken for waste water by workers while cleaning during their night shift. It was not until employees at the Dumbarton sewage station caught a whiff of the alcohol that the mishap was reported. The mixup involved tanks of bulk whisky. The plant employs 600 workers and are now investigating who was responsible for the pricey blunder.

“We are currently investigating an accidental loss on the 26th of February at our Dumbarton site, where some spirit was released to the local water treatment plant,” they said in a statement on Wednesday.

“There has been no release of spirit to the River Leven or any other local water course. We have informed Scottish Water and all other relevant authorities.”

The Chivas Brothers distills the world’s second-best selling brand of Scotch called Ballantine’s.

A representative from Scottish Water Works said they are working quickly to monitor the systems to “ensure treatment has not been compromised.”
