Port Alberni is probably the cheapest but it's a godforsaken hellhole if ever I saw one.

Not really, it has a lot going for it, if you can stand the rain in winter. The environmentalists just more or less killed the lumber industry. Good fishing or at least it used to be. If you want "god forsaken" try Zeballos!

I guess it all depends on what you're looking for really.

If you love nature, hiking, camping, fishing, boating, etc, those small towns are awesome.

If you're looking for high tech, fashion forward, theatre, privacy and generally big city things, you'll die in those small towns.

like a tent?

the question was " cheapest place to live in BC"

You've assumed that it's a homeless person looking for a cheap place to live.

I assumed the person was looking for a place to bring their household belongings too...like their tv, their stereo, jewelery. etc.

I am thinking about moving out west from Ontario, but I know Vancouver is very expensive & has a lot of smog, which city is the cheapest & hopefully cleanest, yet close enough (30-45 drive to major city) to a big city for shopping, & has a smaller city for every week shopping?

Also local farm produce is a benefit : )

Thanks

Michelle
P.S. Do landlords in BC respect tenants more than over here in ON?

Some of the cheapest land in Canada can be found in BC. My friends bought a place last year in the beautiful Bella Coola valley for $150,000. It came with a nice house and over 50 acres of farmland land.

We used to go to Reno once a year and enjoy the big city amenities for a week or so but a few days is enough of the rat race. I'm not sure where you could find privacy in a big city. :) :)

oh by privacy I meant not everybody in the small town knows your business. Small town gossip etc.

In a big city you have as much privacy as you want.

I've been to Bella Coola. I'd want to know quite a few details about a person before I recommended they move there 'lock, stock and barrel'. First of all you'd probably want to be totally healthy, it's a 300 mile drive to the nearest city, through harsh country in winter. If you are totally into hunting, fishing, mountain climbing and reading books it's perfect.

Perhaps in a big city privacy could be accompanied with loneliness.
