so many seem to be hung up because the u.s. is our neighbour, maybe someone should start a new
thread asking- 'what country would you like south of us instead of the u.s.'

i'm quite happy with the u.s. there, they are friends, don't shoot at us, speak the same language, etc.

You don't have a choice. The country to Canada's immediate south will ultimately be called Mexico.

If we went back to the ideas of FDR, Kennedy, and Clinton things would be a lot better than they are today.

FDR, Truman, Adlai Stevenson, Jack Kennedy, LBJ, Hubert Humphrey, George Meany and Scoop Jackson wouldn't be welcome in the Democratic Party today. They loved America. Did you see the way Hillary Clinton was treated during the Democratic Primaries in 2008? They treated her like dirt.

Today's Democratic Party is the party of Jimmy Carter and Juan Peron Obama.

Hi there,

I was reading everybody's opinion on this and some of you are spot on. As a Canadian living in Europe, I can say that the US is a form of "pure Capitalism" like many countries in South America where social systems are virtually non-existent. Good retirement plans are private, health care is private, universities are only for the wealthy, crime is rampant compared to other First World Economies, etc. The gap between rich and poor is huge, and each year this is keeps on growing. The US has a "sick" population since many people can't afford decent (or even basic things like check ups, dentists, medicine, etc).

Now, I don't believe in extremes like pure capitalism or communism BUT a good balance between both ideas is needed if you want a health, safe and forward looking country with well-educated people. A country should offer it's people a good (free) schooling system, affordable tertiary education, decent basic health care, a feeling of national and local security (i.e. not feeling the need to sleep with a gun in the house to feel safe.) etc. And to me, this is not what the US offers to it's citizens... and what is worse, many people there think that these basic "rights" are somehow only found in "bad socialist (communist) countries" and that their way is the best. It doesn't matter that kids with cancer are kicked off health plans or that you need a credit card before a hospital will touch you or that their "Freedom of Speech" is only for those that don't speak out against them like Michael Moore - or that, heaven forbid, publishes a book that supposedly promotes witchcraft i.e. Harry Potter... In fact, a country that allows "Creationism" to be taught in schools but questions evolution has somehow lost its way in this great big ocean of change that the world is experiencing.

I'm American, and I've been in England for 13 years. I avoid political discussions because frankly, politics gives me a huge headache, and I don't feel well enough informed to comment, either. I do hope that the US can pull itself together politically and be run by a solid, stable and intelligent government, even if it seems too much to hope for at this time.

Canada is a LOT more grounded in reality about itself and its place on the planet.

Wooooo! Go Canada!

People who you have abused and hurt want revenge. Just like the revenge you extracted by invading and occupying two nations and then ASSASSINATING OBL in cold blood .......when he should have been arrested and brought to trial like a civilized nation would have done. You murdered your own best witness to terrorism. How stupid is that???

We didn't kill him... We gave him a new place to live... See?

Unfortunately, fireworks are pretty limited here in Canada, so we make do as best we can... And seeing how it was kinda close to Canada Day; well you can fill in the rest.

Too funny... All-expenses-paid to boot!... What more could a jihadist ask for?

.

Obviously you have no clue about America... just what you find on the net.

Look at what Europe's social programs have done to Greece.

Good retirement programs are private. THAT is a laugh. Check out the State Retirement Programs in my home state of Massachusetts. People are walking away with hundreds of thousands of dollars. I WISH I had a state or government pension.

The US is the "greatest" WAR LOVING , over aggressive, nation that has no problem slaughtering thousands in nations that posed no threat to it. It is the "greatest" at LYING about invading and occupying other lands purely in selfish interest ......be it for global control, power or just plain greed.

The US has lost its ethical compass as it has no qualms about targeted assassinations ( illegal) , lynchings, and ignoring international law when it suits its purpose.

The US is beyond arrogant. It is narcissistic to the most pathological degree with no compassion to those they occupy by choice.

.

Meanwhile on the other side of the planet...

Canada is not only BOMBING the brains out of Libya but they are leading the charge.

Talk about hypocrisy... by the way... that is how you spell it.

Now there is a word that the US uses with xtreme prejudice and hypocracy. The discussion is NOT about "hate".....yet that is the usual US fall back immature position. It goes right back to the bush idiocy of "with us or against us".........as if there was no third option of " NEITHER.

When they can't come back with fact , truths ......they hollar " america haters ". Or some other nasty brand. THis is how pre shcool kids act and think. NOT REAL ADULTS.

Did you have any sort of formal education or were you taught in the igloo between fur trapping seasons?

"Freedom of Speech" is only for those that don't speak out against them like Michael Moore - or that, heaven forbid, publishes a book that supposedly promotes witchcraft i.e. Harry Potter... In fact, a country that allows "Creationism" to be taught in schools but questions evolution has somehow lost its way in this great big ocean of change that the world is experiencing.

Ann Coulture's visit. Do I need to elaborate?

Was Michael Moore ever warned about saying the wrong thing might get him arrested?

Do you have a clue?

It most certainly is.

Social programs... bloated government work force... unsustainable pensions.

That's socialism.

Now look at them, broke and rioting.

You think it's that simple? Hehe, Greece is bankrupt and it's because of their social programs? I don't think so..

Watch the video and try to learn something

I'd say that the biggest factor in this is the sense of entitlement for these programs and expectation that somone else (other than themselves) is responsible to pay for them.

It absolutely amazes me that those protesters in Greece have a belief that they shouldn't be expected to actually pay for the services that they demand.... It really is remarkable.

Now look at them, broke and rioting.

Quote: Dean Wormer (Animal House): "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life"

Yup... he's at it again.

I suppose that CUBert is learning, again, that 2 can play this game?

Good on ya

It's remarkable how stupid you think the protesters are, this isn't about social services.

They dug themselves a hole via their attitude for unlimited entitlements and now they are not only unable to pay for them, they are demanding that they remain in place at the expense of the other EU nations..... Really man, this is like watching a guy perpetually hit his hand with a hammer and wonder why it still hurts each time.
