Richard III: The Princes in the Tower
Later this afternoon, the remains of King Richard III will be paraded through Leicestershire - an event that is to be televised live on Channel 4 - ahead of his re-interment in Leicester Cathedral on Thursday.
To mark the occasion, this Channel 4 documentary looks at one of the biggest mysteries in British history: What happened to the Princes in the Tower?
In 1483, the 12-year-old King Edward V and his 9-year-old brother, Richard, Duke of York, were lodged in the Tower of London by the man tasked with looking after them, their uncle, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who was ruling England as Lord Protector due to Edward V being too young. This was supposed to be in preparation for Edward V's coronation as king.
But, not long afterwards, the two brothers - who were the uncles of the future King Henry VIII - mysteriously disappeared and their uncle, Richard, was crowned King Richard III.
Edward V was never crowned and his reign lasted just 86 days. Their disappearance remains a mystery to this day. Some believe they were murdered on the orders of Richard - that is certainly what the Tudors, including William Shakespeare, who turned Richard III into an arch-villain - believed, yet others believe Richard was not responsible.
In this Channel 4 documentary, shown last night, a stellar cast of experts, including historians David Starkey, Philippa Gregory and Nina Ramirez, endeavours to finally uncover the truth.
