From Songfacts.com:

Arguably ELP's best known song, this almost did not happen. On the last day of recording their first album, ELP did not have enough material to fulfill their contract requirements of 21 minutes per album side. Greg Lake started playing this ballad that he had wrote when he was 12 years old. The group started to record this, improvising as they went along. Keith Emerson's signature Moog solo at the end was his first take and he wasn't aware that the tape was running.

I'm listening to my cat purr and "talk" to me. She won't shut up and if I try to tell her to she thinks I'm responding to her questions....and that is the problem...all her meows ARE questions....She's the devil...

I'm listening to this low windy sound reverberating between my ears, like air flowing through a cavern. I think I need to go to sleep.

I love Emerson's synthesizer in Lucky Man. To me it takes the song to a completely different level.

I saw ELP twice in Vancouver. The first was my very first concert in 74 - just after they released Brain Salad Surgery. I believe they opened with Jerusalem. Just blew the doors off of the Pacific Coliseum.

I'm listening to my cat purr in my ear. It's the most comforting of sounds.
