Let's imagine the following hypothetical scenario. In 2008 a series of natural disasters across Canada, including tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. devastated the economy such that our current GDP is now half of what it was last year. Many are homeless, starving, the government is indepted, etc., and Canadian society is on the verge of collapse. People are talking about arming themselves for what they believe is an upcoming collapse of government and anarchy.

In a panic, we reduce parliament to a small committee of ten or so members so that govenrment can function more quickly.

You're now the Prime Minister of Canada and the committee supports you fully.

Now the only way to save the country from collapse into anarchy is to slash government spending in all areas deemed non-essential, and restructure social services, education, etc. to be as efficient and effective as possible.

As PM, what would you do?

I guess the royal "we" means you are not of the general gun carrying people maybe.
Whoever we is depends on what is to be saved for whom. Are you saveing the economy or the country? In no case would I advise consolodation of parliamentry power to committee especially since regional representation and communication would be of the utmost utility in any disaster scenerio except that which threatens the upper class. Efficiency requires your further explanation especially in light of the mixture of we and people.

I wouldn't just slash spending, it'd be abolished along with every other economic capitalisitc plan that has failed us to date. I would then form a new system based on the above link's information (With a few updated modifications)

Life would not only be brought back into balance for the nation, not only remove the above problems, but it would also make everyone's lives more easier overall, less streeful, and you would have more opportunity to do what you really want to do in your life, not what you have to do based on limitations created by capitalism.

If the overall population of the nation rejected this plan, then I'll just pack my sh*t, grab my firearms & supplies and head to the caves to wait out the overall distruction of the country due to its own greed.

That would not be difficult, but the first thing you would have to do is build yourself a bullet proof shelter with a big wide moat around it and pit bulls tied up at 20' intervals and any communication would be done by video conferencing. After that it's simple- you enact the laws of survival of the fittest- it's all you can do as you are down to two choices, either the human race is going to continue or it's not and if it is you have to keep the healthiest specimans. A lot of the "weak" will quickly get strong and a lot of them won't. Such is life.

Interesting responses. I'm wondering, who here stopped for a moment to consider that even if the naitonal GDP were cut in half, Canada would still be wealthier than many nations on a per capita basis?

So if we think that a sudden slashing of Canada's wealth by half would wold leave the government powerless, then certainly Canada forfeits the moral right to be telling other nations what to do with their limited wealth.

Scary thing is, I think you're right. If we slashed our wealth by half, Canada's government would be clueless even though other governments are still maintaining stability with not even that. So perhaps it's time for Canada to learn from other nations and see how they manage to maintain themselves with such limited wealth.

Let anarchy reign, I'm calling dibs on the CN Tower where I will house my loyal cult followers.

And while you sleep at the top of the tower, I'll be sneaking over each night to gradually file down the bottom of the tower until one day you wake up to a sudden shaking, and when you look our the windows, you suddenly see the world turning on a weird angle..... then you suddenly realize that it's you turning on a weird angle as all the buildings and the ground come at you at break neck speed.

What's the moral of the story?

During the time you live in an anarchy society, don't pick the tallest places to live.

You better hope your palace isn't the skydome as you know where the tower is going to be falling... 8O
