I am pro Walmart self checkout. If I have two or three things I can get out of there way faster doing it myself. Same at Home Depot. I should get a discount for performing the work they otherwise have to pay someone to do. But I don't get a discount.

This is the basic problem with automation. When machines displace workers those workers get nothing and the consumer gets nothing the only people who profit are the companies.
Feel free to use a cashier lane.

Stick it to Da Man, Hoid!

Northern Ontario,
I like to have real people to blame if a mistake is made......lol

And you never know who you will meet...
From a ten year old post......
This morning....five hundred miles away from home.....at the check-out counter at Walmart at Eglington near Warden in Toronto, the cashier asks me for my postal code and for once I tell the truth, (I usually give any number that pops in my mind)......

The young lady waiting in line behind me says to me....hey you're from "Kap"? (using the shortened name for my home town) Do you know the "L*******"?.....her parents, neighbours on the next street from mine.

Sure is a small world:icon_smile:

Well I guess it was bound to happen, a unique way to get rid of those pesky minimum wage cashiers....

Jim Hightower writes that the risk of technology displacing workers is ultimately just one instance of the wider problem of corporate greed

Also they are getting an app where you won;t even have to go to a cash register but just scan it with you phone. Not sure how you get a paper receipt - maybe you don't need one.

The best thing about this is that the self check out is credit/debit only.

Future generations will never know the pain of waiting in line behind an old person who wants to pay in cash. And with exact change. It always has to be exact change.

Or, God forbid, a personal check..
