Its an issue of throwing all competition out the window in Canada!

The CRTC doesn't allow for competition!

Never in there right mind would they even consider letting to channels compete for viewers!

Thats to mind boggling to have a free industry!

Huh?

I disagree. I mean, to a degree. I think it is a regulation of competition...but not just competition, but all the technical aspects of how television is delivered in Canada, and for that reason the CRTC is very important. And again, there is not a major country that does not have a regulatory board for radio and television. But, like I said, your doing the right thing...you are speaking up....so, tell the CRTC what you want to see in Canada.

Westman,

One thing to keep in mind here. If any Canadian broadcasters license material from the USA network to broadcast under their own channel, the application will be denied.

Also, if HBO is denied a license everytime if applies to the CRTC, what makes you think the usa network will get one?

Who wants to watch the USA Network anyways? I'm in the US at the moment and most of the channels you get here that you don't see in Canada are some of the worst rubbish I've seen on the air before. Who wants to watch the same movie every night for weeks on the USA network? If you really want to watch Wrestling, you can sure get it in Canada... same with Monk and the other shows mentioned.

Westmanguy: Your notion of the CRTC disallowing competition is pure bollocks. Your other posts prove that. Can Canadians not choose between what? 60 channels on cable? Did Rogers not just add BBC World to their lineup allowing even more 24/7 news competition?

GET REAL!

Because Shaw is behind it.

And CH (Canwest Global dumping ground) can get a simulcast permit on certain shows.

Our television is communist.

The gov. locks out all these channels because they are not suitable for us!

And FYI who actually watches "Canadian" programming?

.

I do, for one, and millions do as well . I rarely watch American programmes. They are just too, in my opinion, trashy to enjoy as entertainment. The only thing I watch that is American are movies. Sitcoms, if not Canadian, I watch British.

It is not communist to support your local industry, which is what the government is attempting.

Okay....westmanguy....you are the same dude who says antiimmigrant stuff because you feel that immigrants won't assimilate and conform to our culture and your sick of seeing laws being made to accomodate these folks. Yet, you seem to hate Canadian culture...our television is part of our culture...and favour immigration of sorts for channels of other countries, without "assimilation" or being watered down by Cancon rulings or the like. Do you see any hypocrisy here?

Generalizing just a tad Sanctus?

I wouldn't exactly call PBS trashy or TLC or Discovery.

Oh sanctus how far off you are.

70% of Canada's top shows are American.

Our top shows are CSI and American Idol.

The only thing that does well ratings wise in Canada is:

News
Sports
Corner Gas
Canadian Idol
Degrassi: The Next Generation.

CBC programming and other shows bomb rating-wise up here.

So "millions" is way of base. Our #1 show CSI gets around 2 million. And our top Canadian show is Corner Gas and CTV National News which only get around 1-2 million viewers.

millions is way of base.

And its not supporting your local industry!

CTV

1.5 hours of CTV's primetime lineup is Canadian, or 6%.

So sanctus, you call this an aid to our local industry?

And 99% of this country watches "trashy" American programming at least once a week.

These are shows not currently provided in Canada.

They are not going to hurt Canadian talent.

Its mentality like yours that does not allow for competition in this nation's TV sector.

You know, the way I want things would help the tv industry.

If all American tv was up here, IT WOULD FORCE NETWORKS LIKE CTV AND GLOBAL TO CREATE QUALITY CANADIAN PROGRAMMING TO WIN OVER VIEWERS AND CREATE JOBS FOR CANADIAN TALENT.

Boy, do people not realize by hugging and protecting this industry from American competition, we are allowing them to reair American shows, and not put an effort into canadian programming.

Perhaps, but in this house we watch as I stated. And I cannot see why you spend so much time worrying over these things. IT IS JUST TELEVISION West, not terribly important in the scheme of things.

Well DurkaDurka, its a odd fetish I have!

I obsess on television, send letters to the CRTC weekly, and fight to get changes done.

I am not against Canadian programming but 70% of it is crap, that is used as a filler to reach the CRTC's madate.

If competition was allowed, it would create jobs in this industry and get us quality programming for us to watch.

CBC's shows barely ever enter the Canadian top 30.

And sanctus you are doing the opposite:

By supporting the CRTC and the way things are done your allow networks like CTV and Global> to reair American programming and put the signal over the American source and rack up $$ on advertising.

Its alot cheaper to buy American programming then to create Canadian programming.

The way I want things, would open us to all the missing shows and create more jobs in the tv industry and give us quality programming.

And I can't catch these missing shows online.

CBS Innertube (equivelant to CTV Broadband Network) bans Canadian IP addresses, and all other television online sources from US networks ban my IP address.

Oh my landsakes:

CSI
CSI: Miami
CSI: New York
Boston Legal
House
ER
Grey's Anatomy
Desperate Housewives
24
American Idol
etc.

You don't watch American tv, so how do you make judgement on the programming?

And guess your saying 99% of Canadians just love trash shows!

IMO, and MANY others Canadian shows are trash and a waste of time.
