Why does Canada even need to retaliate when Trump's steel tariffs will hurt the US consumer far more than it will any Canadian?

Now that I think about it, if Canadian steel producers can't sell as much to the US market, then they'll have to drop their prices to sell to the Canadian market. That makes for business opportunities. Perhaps Canada could invite Harley Davidson to Canada and even offer a five-year work visa to any of its workers who were already working there prior to the day Trump imposed the tariffs.

OK, we're good. Sorry, I'm a bit cranked up. Rough day.

Let's go grab a plate of poutine and call it even, OK?

You got poutine where you live?

The Americans told Trudeau he had to accept a 5 year sunset clause on nafta and Trudeau told them to **** off.

Therefore yesterdays announcement.

Given how at most Trump can sit eight years, Canada might have been wise to introduce an eight-year sunset clause until we could negotiate with a saner mind.

nobody should make any agreements with America while Trump is nominally in charge.

Yeah, baby! Let's get it on!

I don't like Trump much. But credit where due.

He did the right thing striking Syria. . . twice.

He did the right thing showing what is for him remarkable patience with trying to get North Korea to negotiate seriously.

And he's doing the right thing now. You want the tariffs lifted? Quit acting as a transshipping station for dumped Chinese metal and drop your own protectionist policies. Have a glass of milk.
And there goes the neighborhood. Oh dear.

Canada hits back at U.S. with dollar-for-dollar tariffs on steel, aluminum, maple syrup | CBC News

Sooo what does the CDN contingency of the Trump Cult think about this?? Support Trump as usual........or defend CDA?? Perhaps they should seriously think about changing their citizenships & moving to Trump land.

Trump's (insane ) abuse of power is just beginning. we ain't seen nuthin yet. Mexico is reacting. The UE EU is reacting.......

Another Tyrannical trump hand grenade thrown out for dramatic effect regardless of how many it hurts.

This has the flavor of revenge. (NOT getting exactly what HE waNTS IN nafta.......ETC.

*************

rEVENGE IS THE THEME OF MANY OF HIS DECISIONS. jUST LIKE GRANTING THE FOUR PARDONS TODAY.........ALL OF WHOM WERE TIED TO cOOMEY.......WHO HE DESPISES. ( AFTER ALL cOOMEY HURT HIS FEELINGS BY SPEAKING THE facts AND tRUTH.
Well no more cheap cheese when filling up onAmericanfuel .

as in no body. Might even consider to stop buying American.......until Trump is out of office. He does not want to get along with anyone........he jsut wants to be a tryant and dictate the terms to favor the US and therefore HIM It is all about HIM......and his narcissism........whether fair or legal......... it matters little.

A true psychopath......and dangerous. Perhaps this is what the tRump cult enjoys so much..... they feel aggressively empowered by his bellicosity; and nastiness.

He is a deal breaker. a destroyer...........so why should anyone deal with him........he cannot be trusted. too volatile and unpredictable. this is not a leadership tactic......itis a mental illness.

the issue is far larger than the tariffs. and the damage could be lasting.

Is that a threat?? You must be feeling cornered. You can thank your Tyrannical psycho for this.

Seems threats and therefore a form of terrorism is the current method of your tyrannical leader.........and his Cult of followers.

He can't stand anything running well........or maintaining positive relations.........especially with his neighbors.

Not to worry.......we are used to your threats. That is the only language you seem to know. It is sad to watch the pathos unhurl.

PLEASE leave religion out of this. If ever it was NB to stick to the facts* rational & logical thinking it is now. The tensions could get a lot worse...thanks to the tyrant to the south of us.

Every deal should have a sunset clause , situations and markets change and international agreements should change along with the times . IMHO .

You made me think of something here. Let's suppose Canada didn't legally retaliate against the US but Canadian consumers just decided to boycott US products. Clearly Trump would look like an idiot to order Canada to force Canadians to buy US products. So if Canada doesn't officially raise tariffs and instead Canadians themselves just choose to boycott the US at the grassroots, the US would have a hard time arguing Canada is engaging in unfair trade.

We sure need to be trading farther afield than solely with our US neighbour. We have all of our eggs in one basket and our neighbour is becoming increasingly unstable and untrustworthy. The sooner we distance ourselves from the convulsing monster to the South, the better.

I Like your thinking about this. The crazy thing in all this too is that the reason he gave for this action is: "national security"........The things that can be done under the guise/ excuse of "national security"

By not buying American until Trump is out of office........might just be a way to go....... quietly...... without fanfare other drama........ just doing it.

NAFTA is a different issue...... but indirectly tied in.

By not buying American until Trump is out of office........might just be a way to go....... quietly...... without attention to it or other drama........ just doing it.

Sorry. That was supposed to be a "green". I think that you're on your something. It wouldn't take much at all to spread a movement like that to the EU and UK.

Oh definitely. remember too that our government finds itself in a tough spot. If it legally retaliates, that can lead to escalation as the US could use that as a pretext to escalate to additional trade barriers in an ever-escalating trade war.

If Canadians at the grassroots decided to help the Canadian government out of this dilemma but just boycotting the US, then we'd help Canada escape this dilemma. Canada could choose to not retaliate or even drop tariffs against the US but to no avail since Canadians would have just chosen to boycott US products.

Again, what's Trump going to do? Order Canada to force Canadians to buy American?

Sorry. That was supposed to be a "green". I think that you're on your something. It wouldn't take much at all to spread a movement like that to the EU and UK.

And China and Mexico and whoever else got hit too.

If this caught on, our governments could ironically lower tariffs against the US out of pity as masses of people at the grassroots just wouldn't buy American no matter how much we lowered tariffs against US products.

TOTALLY AGREE That was our mistake........ not branching out .......when we have good realtions within the commonwealth etc.

this could be a defining moment for CDA...... and in a good way if handled properly.

Also, if US businesses got wind of this, many of them might choose to move to our countries so that they could stamp Made in (anywhere but the US) just to avoid the boycott.
