Keystone job creation said overstated

Attempts to revive the Keystone approval process prompted Green America, an environmental group, to issue a release Monday saying those efforts "show no regard for the level of study required of the massive pipeline project."

"Some in Congress are trying to use our country's dire need for job creation as an excuse to build this pipeline," it said.

"Data on job creation commissioned by the oil industry, while still in circulation, has been grossly inflated," Green America suggested.

The $7 billion pipeline proposed by Calgary-based TransCanada Corp would bring mostly oilsands crude oil to refineries on the U.S. gulf coast.

A bill proposed by some Republican supporters of the project, which TransCanada has spent three years trying to launch, would have required approval to be decided within 60 days.

On November 10, the U.S. State Department delayed issuing its opinion on the project until environmental assessments can be made for a new route that would take the pipeline away from

Nebraska's Sandhills region and the Ogalalla aquifer that supplies water to eight states.

That appeared to put final approval by the White House off for up to 18 months from now, after the next Congressional and presidential elections in 2012.

Some juicy pwnage.

Obama stands firm on Keystone pipeline in face of Canadian pressure

President Barack Obama pushed back Wednesday against Canada's complaints over the Keystone XL oilsands pipeline, bluntly telling Prime Minister Stephen Harper that his administration will decide the long-delayed project's fate on its own timetable and not succumb to pressure for a speedier ruling.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Harper in Washington, Obama also threatened to reject efforts by congressional Republicans to pass legislation forcing a decision on the $7-billion pipeline within 60 days.

"I think the prime minister and our Canadian friends understand that it's important for us to make sure that all the questions regarding the project are properly understood, especially its impact on our environment and the health and safety of the American people," Obama said.

The Keystone XL issue has become a source of persistent friction between Harper and Obama over the past year. But that tension became more pronounced last month when the U.S. announced it would delay a final ruling on whether the project could proceed until after the 2012 presidential elections.

The U.S. State Department, which is conducting a review of the 2,700-kilometre pipeline, said the extra time was needed to evaluate alternate routes that would avoid the ecologically fragile Sandhills region in Nebraska.

But U.S. supporters of the pipeline have alleged that politics was behind the move, with Obama attempting to avoid a confrontation with environmental groups.

Last week, Harper said he also was concerned that politics had infected the decision-making process.

Obama had a tart response Wednesday for his critics.

"With respect to the politics, look, this is a big project with big consequences. We've seen Democrats and Republicans express concerns about it," he said.

That's okay. The Enbridge lines are a go.

XL is still going. If you want I can go take some pics of XL pipe being loaded on "Soo Line" trains.

The harder the greens push the quicker Iran gets smoked. With $200 a bbl oil just days away when Iran closes Straights of Hormuz, Yanks will be begging for pipelines.

I made a comment the other day about trying to get you to "think bigger" this IS bigger.

I was listening to a science podcast, and they were saying that alot of denialism is based on an inherent bias a lot of people have about economic policy and big government.

To make a currency worth something it needs to have buyers who buy your currency in order to buy your products sold in your currency (energy, etc). It's our financial backbone for the next 400 years.

CNN: Keystone pipeline: How many jobs it would really create

TransCanda (TRP), the company that wants to build the pipeline, says Keystone would create 20,000 "direct" jobs. That includes 13,000 construction jobs and 7,000 jobs making stuff like pump houses and the pipe itself.

It also projects nearly 120,000 "indirect" jobs -- think restaurant workers and hotel employees to support the construction.

TransCanada spokesman Shawn Howard defends the forecast: "If our budgets and work plans were way off, we'd lack credibility with the markets, shippers and others," he said. "Those who dispute the numbers clearly do not have this experience, have not actually done proper studies on this project to support their claims and can only venture guesses."

But TransCanada numbers count each job on a yearly basis. If the pipeline employs 10,000 people working for two years, that's 20,000 jobs by the company's count.

The estimates also include jobs in Canada, where about a third of the $7 billion pipeline would be constructed.

The U.S. State Department, which must green light the project, forecasts just 5,000 direct U.S. jobs over a two year construction period.

Even according to TransCanada, the amount of permanent jobs created would be only in the hundreds. "Those are the real numbers," said Susan Casey-Lefkowitz, director of international programs at the Natural Resources Defense Council. "The Republicans have been acting as if this is a national jobs package, and it's not."

Meanwhile, one study from Cornell University said the pipeline could actually lead to a decline in jobs in the long run. One reason is that the pipeline would lead to higher fuel prices in the Midwest, the study said, and that would slow consumer spending and cost jobs.

The study also said jobs could also be lost due to crop failures or other events associated with higher pollution levels the oil sands would bring. And it said more oil would mean a decline in green jobs.

What can one say? Will President Obama veto the bill because of the pipeline.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled House has passed legislation sought by President Barack Obama to extend Social Security payroll tax cuts through 2012. But the bill also includes a requirement for construction of an oil pipeline that has drawn a veto threat.
The vote was 234-193.
The measure now goes to the Senate, where top Democrats strongly oppose the pipeline provision.
The legislation would also renew jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed. And it would head off a threatened 27 percent cut in fees to doctors who treat Medicare patients.
With lawmakers expected to adjourn soon for the year, the partisan showdown is the last of a remarkably quarrelsome year of divided government.

Obama has gone from 'reviewing' it to chopping the pipeline and all of the benefits associated with it.

The position of his party (and himself) on the enviro risks is their business, however, he waffled recently in stating that it was under further investigation.. Now, he has played his cards in stating that it is an unlikely passage.
