Joe Crowley of N.Y., a top-ranking House Democrat, is partys first incumbent to lose a 2018 primary after challenge from the left

Activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has defeated Crowley, the Associated Press projected. Crowley, a member of Democratic House leadership, has represented parts of the Bronx and Queens since 1999. Ocasio-Cortez, a first-time candidate and the first to challenge Crowley in 14 years, ran on universal Medicare, a jobs guarantee and abolishing ICE.

ME FIRST. What a grim caricature of a man. I used to think some of the American politicians were almost so far out in right field you would have a hard time seeing them even from center field, never mind left field. Now I just think they have left the field entirely, having become a crazy and dangerous group of old men and women who are drunk on power and armed to the teeth. With avarice, hate, anger and many other weapons of mass destruction, they toil night and day to remove compassion, equality, and love as part of the fabric of their country. America has truly fallen.
There is a cultural revolution occurring. Mao would be clapping in applause. This is a war between love and hate, good and evil. Armed to the teeth, the right and the left, face each other on a ship that is in danger of sinking. Not even it’s much touted legal system can keep it from sinking. Babylon the great has fallen! And now reveals its once secret dark soulless underbelly for all to see. This is only the beginning. Who knows if there can be any winners in such a war. - Chris Waller

This is as close to draining the swamp as we are going to see.

Former NAACP president Ben Jealous wins Maryland Democratic primary, will take on Gov. Larry Hogan in November

Jealous defeated five other major candidates, including establishment favorite Rushern L. Baker III, the two-term Prince Georges County executive. Jealous, a first-time candidate, embraced the progressive platform of Sen. Bernie Sanders and relied heavily on unions to mobilize their members while also targeting black and Latino voters and white liberals who supported Sanders for president in 2016.

Hogan, who is unopposed for the Republican nomination, remains popular in a state where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans more than 2-to-1.

Justice Anthony Kennedy to retire from Supreme Court

Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who provided key votes for same sex-marriage, abortion access and affirmative action, will retire from the Supreme Court.

Kennedy's decision to step down could transform the Supreme Court for generations. President Donald Trump will have his second opportunity to nominate a justice and will likely replace Kennedy with a young, conservative jurist. That would create a bloc of five staunch conservative justices who could move the court further to the right and cement a conservative majority for the foreseeable future.

Trump official seeks to sanction Chinese leaders on human rights concerns

Sam Brownback, the U.S. ambassador for religious freedom, is pressing the Trump administration to impose sanctions on Chinese leaders associated with the countrys crackdown on faith groups, according to two congressional aides briefed by the administration.

Brownback told Republican members of Congress in private meetings this month that he believes the U.S. has a unique moment to address religious liberty given ongoing trade talks with China, according to the aides, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the effort.
