I think Trump likes to come across as being able to play "hardball", but unless I miss my guess he WON'T "cut off his nose to spite his face", but he also won't walk away leaving anything on the table!

He's going to leave the table wearing a straight jacket.

The problem with Trump is that he's unpredictable. He'd be prepared to tank the US economy just to teach Canada and Mexico a lesson as long as he can tank the Canadian and Mexican economies more. And given our comparative economies, he could do that. When he'd be prepared to tank the US economy just to hurt Canada and Mexico, how can we even pretend that he's predictable.

Are you of the opinion that if there is no formal trade deal in place between Canada, Mexico and the USA that the world as we know it, will cease to exist?

When did I say that? It will certainly put more than a little dent in the North American economy though.

Canada could compensate to a degree by copying Singapore I suppose.

Adjustments will take place and there will be a transition period with some economic pain. That said, being forced to take a more aggressive approach on international trade will be in Canada's best long term interests

There will always be a trade deal including the three as long as they are all signatories to the WTO. Is Trump reckless enough to leave that also?

It is worth pointing out that all of it runs contrary to the official GOP platform of the last few decades and one of his own Senators might easily knife Trump on the steps.

I am not, I’m Canadian. I’m not arrogant enough to refer to myself as American.

There is NO nation more corrupt than the United States. They are so corrupt they corrupt other countries to do their bidding.
The world should just learn to say, 'No.' like we did.

Look at how he's behaving on NAFTA. He's risking failing to strike a deal altogether even though that would hurt the US economy itself. What do you call that?

Is it possible you are attaching too much importance to NAFTA?
Canada has commodities that Trump knows are important to him!

He's going to leave the table wearing a straight jacket.

If we were dealing with a half-witted president, he'd understand just how much failing to make any deal could hurt the US. Trump, I'm not so sure. I don't deny that Canada stands more to gain than the US on NAFTA and lose without NAFTA due to our economies of scale. But let's not kid ourselves: NAFTA benefits the US too. I'm just not sure Trump understands this and as a result he could unwittingly tank the US economy in an attempt to make Canada suffer. he'd succeed in making Canada suffer, but Americans would suffer too.

Strangely enough, though I thought Clinton might be the better candidate, I was so disappointed that if I were a US voter I might have still voted for Trump just to give my country a wake-up call. There is a point below which voting for the worst possible candidate might make sense. pardon my cynicism.

I'm just wondering how long it is going to take Congress to put pressure on Trump once the several thousand US companies and hundreds of thousands of exporters who have vested interests in start to complain to their Representatives and Senators.
