Access to the arctic, east and west.

That right there would be the BIGGEST value of having Greenland or any part of the region.

Part of why Russia is such a threat.

What's in the ground is great and all, but those are still finite resources. Access to a shorter trade route to Asia/Pacific? That will pay out for long after those things are collected and made into other shit.
Once the Russian people divest themselves of the thugocracy, which will happen some time, the political and military advantage is largely irrelevant. Also the people with the money tend to think in terms of quarterly profits, not long term political strategy.
The whole trade route thing depends largely on globull warming to make it viable. Since we will soon be heading into global cooling, the trade route may not be much of a financial advantage. Strategically, it will always be worth having.

Hasn't happened in several centuries yet. Be he a Tsar, a commissar, or a President, Russia is always ruled by a thugocracy.

Honestly I think it's very cultural how Russia just deals with itself vs. a lot of other nations. "Thugocracy" whether a hold over from the Rus or Monguls or something else entirely, it's just... how they are.

If Russians want something 'better' they usually end up leaving instead of staying.

Maybe it's just the cold that makes them like this.

It's their culture. For a while, I was engaged in the Russian emigre community through dating a former government interpreter.

She put it best. "If you don't have a boot on our necks, we don't believe you are strong enough to protect us."
