The Canadian-German agreement sets no targets for volumes of hydrogen produced and contains no commitments of new money to help commence exports to Europe by 2025.

The joint declaration of intent makes clear the agreement is not legally binding and stipulates it will be up to Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Germany’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action to keep track of whether it’s making progress on its goals….or goal posts.

The Canadian and German governments have signed a deal to co-operate on exporting hydrogen fuel to Europe, setting an ambitious target of 2025 to begin shipments from Eastern Canada – where a single hydrogen production plant has yet to be built.

The agreement also says Ottawa and Berlin will set rules that define the carbon intensity of hydrogen so producers can determine what can be called clean, low carbon or renewable hydrogen.

The challenge with joint declarations, such as the one Canada and Germany have made, is “they risk being filed away and ultimately forgotten after a few follow-up meetings,” Mr. Agnew said. Maybe it is a “worldwide change for the better” but I have my doubts. Once the smokescreen isn’t needed any longer, the whole project can be ecologically recycled, assuming windmills can be recycled by that point.

'Hydrogen alliance' formed as Canada, Germany sign agreement on exports

"The need for clean energy is almost limitless,
Especially so if the producers get to decide what’s clean and what’s not.
and that's where Canada, and Atlantic Canada specifically, gets to step up. With our renewable resources, we have a huge advantage."

The agreement also says Ottawa and Berlin will set rules that define the carbon intensity of hydrogen so producers can determine what can be called clean, low carbon or renewable hydrogen.

The agreement, which Trudeau called the "Canada-Germany hydrogen alliance," was signed in a town where a company plans to build a large plant to convert wind energy to hydrogen and export ammonia to Germany. But the World Energy GH2 project — which would include 164 wind turbines along the nearby Port au Port Peninsula — has yet to undergo provincial environmental approval, and residents were told about it only in meetings that started in June.

If this provincial environmental approval was to happen in Western Canada, it would be the beginning of a decades long process with Federal Veto along with everyone & their dogs being consulted looking for dissenting voices for justification to shut it down. This without prior approval is supposed to be producing (modesty) within three years without a plant being started yet? Hmm…

August 23rd, 2022:

A week previous to this:

Just 1 in 4 Americans believe that President Biden’s so-called Inflation Reduction Act will actually reduce inflation, while 71 percent say the law will either have no impact or make things worse. The majority is right to be skeptical. The nonpartisan Penn Wharton Budget Model found that the bill’s effect on inflation will be “statistically indistinguishable from zero.”

This is not surprising. The real purpose of the bill is not to reduce inflation but to reduce climate change. Fully 85 percent of the law’s spending goes toward climate and clean energy. So, what will the bill’s effect be on the climate?

Answer: Statistically indistinguishable from zero.

President Biden's signing of the Inflation Reduction Act is changing the landscape for Americans interested in buying an electric vehicle. The law replaces a previous tax break for EVs with a new set of credits, although that depends on where a car is assembled.

The manufacturing requirements are effective as of August 16, the day the bill became law. Other restrictions, including strict limits on where batteries can be mined and assembled, kick in starting in 2023 and ramp up in future years.

Trudeau fell behind AB and SK Premiers on hydrogen so he had to do something to get a port build in the east for the west.

SASK IS GOING BLUE: HYDROGEN HUB WILL PROMOTE FURTHER INVESTMENT IN THE PROVINCE

MAY 16, 2022
This news release originally appeared on the Government of Saskatchewan website.
The Government of Saskatchewan is ramping up development work on a potential hydrogen hub in the Regina-Moose Jaw region.
The Ministry of Energy and Resources, Whitecap Resources, and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) will support a foundation report study, developed by the Transition Accelerator and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), to provide investors with a thorough analysis of commercial-scale hydrogen opportunities and synergies with carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) infrastructure in Saskatchewan.
"We're a world leader in CCUS and enhanced oil recovery, which have natural connections to blue hydrogen," Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said. "We expect this report to accelerate the private sector's interest in Saskatchewan's emerging hydrogen economy."
The hydrogen market is expanding globally, with increasing use in power generation, transportation fuel, and feedstock in the chemical industry. 'Blue hydrogen' projects are enabled using CCUS technology.
In September 2021, the Government of Saskatchewan announced several new policy commitments to advance CCUS projects, including advancing opportunities for an infrastructure hub in the Regina-Moose Jaw industrial corridor. A hydrogen/CCUS hub in this region could allow for the development of an entire, commercial scale hydrogen supply and demand chain in Saskatchewan.
In October 2021, Whitecap Resources and FCL signed a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities around CCUS, enhanced oil recovery and CO2 transportation infrastructure.

Alberta is already the largest hydrogen producer in Canada. We have all the resources, expertise, and technology needed to quickly become a global supplier of clean, low-cost hydrogen. With a worldwide market estimated to be worth over $2.5 trillion a year by 2050, hydrogen can be the next great energy export that fuels jobs, investment and economic opportunity across our province.

Suncor shifts focus to hydrogen and renewable fuel over wind and solar

Canadian energy company Suncor says it is getting rid of its wind and solar assets.

In a news release Monday, the Calgary-based company says it still intends to be net-zero emissions by 2050, but will accelerate progress towards that target by focusing on hydrogen and renewable fuels instead.

Suncor says its strategy for hitting the 2050 goal is also focused on increasing shareholder returns.

The company says it has developed eight wind power projects since 2002 in three provinces — Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario.

The news release says efforts to hit the 2050 net-zero goal also include replacing coke-fired boilers at its Base Plant oilsands project near Fort McMurray, Alta., with lower emission cogeneration units, as well as accelerating commercial-scale deployment of carbon capture technology.

It also notes it's partnering with ATCO on a project to build a world-scale hydrogen project in Alberta and deploying next-generation renewable fuel technologies like LanzaJet's sustainable aviation fuel technology and Enerkem's waste-to-fuels technology.

THE FUTURE OF HYDROGEN IN CANADA

Canada is playing a critical role in the development of the global hydrogen economy with innovators in production processes and pioneers in fuel cell technology. To demonstrate Canada’s leadership in hydrogen, the Canadian Hydrogen Convention launched its inaugural event in April 2022 in Edmonton, Alberta.
As the world pushes to decarbonize and countries navigate through the energy transition, traditional carbon-emitting energy sources will soon electrify - with low-carbon fuels expected to provide up to 60 per cent of the world’s energy needs. As the largest event in Canada showcasing hydrogen as a key enabler to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the Canadian Hydrogen Convention will position Canada as a global hydrogen superpower.
This must-attend event will bring the entire Canadian supply chain together to discuss innovations and solutions for low-carbon hydrogen production, energy infrastructure, storage and the path forward as Canada works towards net zero by 2050.

Yeah, but Alberta is Alberta in this current political climate. It’s too much Alberta to be involved in a Liberal pre-Election announcement.

…because Efficiency? Reliability? Cost Effectiveness? That’s not woke. It won’t get Trudeau his UN Seat for after he’s washed his hands of Canada.
THE FUTURE OF HYDROGEN IN CANADA?
Apparently it’s not where Hydrogen is ALREADY being produced close to its source.

Yeah. The wind turbines. I still think the whole announcement is a smokescreen for German Automakers. Let’s spend the next three years NOT building infrastructure for LNG to the East Coast of Canada in its National interests & then see where we’re at I guess.

At the rate things are going, Putin might still be invading Ukraine and holding Europe hostage to Russian Energy in three years, & Europe will still be buying Russian Energy funding Putins war on Ukraine. The difference will be three winters will have passed for the Europeans, & they will be hunting for anybody else to provide them with LNG….& Canada would still be at least three years away from contributing significantly.

Its too embarassing for Trudeau to say "were buying routing through the US pipelines to export LNG through a Louisiana facility that was conceived on the sameday as the Kitimat LNG project but running for two years already".

Trudeau needs to hide this fact...

Experts warn that it may take more time for Atlantic Canada’s green hydrogen projects to come to fruition. In part, that’s due to the sheer amount of infrastructure required, from wind turbines, hydrogen production facilities, pipelines and liquefaction plants — to the terminals and regasification plants that will be required on the other side of the Atlantic.

Green hydrogen is also still a developing technology that remains more costly than conventional hydrogen production methods using natural gas — even after factoring in the additional costs associated with using carbon capture technology to ensure near-zero emissions, said University of Alberta professor Amit Kumar, the industrial research chair in energy and environmental systems for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.

“The cost of producing hydrogen from wind-based electricity is three to four times higher than producing hydrogen from natural gas integrated with carbon capture and storage,” Kumar said.

And some of the green hydrogen projects proposed in Atlantic Canada would only be capable of producing a fraction of the supply that can currently be produced using natural gas, Kumar added. “The technology is still developing. The costs are still high. And the scale is still very small.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there has “never been a strong business case” for liquified natural gas exports from Canada’s East Coast to Europe, dealing a blow to those in the energy industry who thought Russia’s invasion of Ukraine presented an opportunity to revive dormant gas projects???

Canada’s notoriously slow-moving environmental review process, which combined with federal politics, provincial politics and climate-change activism means any proposal faces the prospect of swimming through molasses. Ottawa’s decision in February to quash Énergie Saguenay came eight years after the project was launched.

Compare this to the United States, which had almost no LNG export capacity in 2016 but six short years later is the world’s largest LNG exporter, thanks to a rapid expansion of pipelines and terminals. The U.S. is cashing in on Europe importing record amounts of LNG, at record prices.

If the Canadian gas patch were given the freedom to move quickly, there would appear to be a business for new investment in significant LNG exports. Canada also produces some of the world’s least carbon-intensive gas. When gas displaces coal – still widely used in Europe and Asia – it reduces greenhouse-gas emissions.

BUT what the Trudeau government really wanted to talk about during Mr. Scholz’s visit was something else: how Canada could become an important supplier to Germany of hydrogen, produced by zero-emission power. The two countries signed an agreement to that effect in Stephenville, NL, on Tuesday.

It’s a potentially lucrative opportunity. BUT gas and hydrogen should not be seen as an either-or proposition.

What kind of energy the rest of the world chooses to use is up to the rest of the world. We can’t dictate that by trying to shut in our own fossil fuels. As a country sitting on huge stocks of both renewable and non-renewable energy, what we must do is make sure our politics and our regulatory system open the door to a world of investors, those willing to use their own billions to make “the business case” for Canada as the place to produce any and all energy.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a surprising statement Tuesday when, during his visit to this country, he called Canada “our partner of choice” in Germany’s efforts to wean itself off Russian energy.

“For now, this means increasing our liquid natural gas imports,” Mr. Scholz said. “We hope that Canadian LNG will play a major role in this.”

Don’t hold your breath, Olaf.

Never quite thought of it that way, but you're right.
It's really bad - which is bad enough but then there's the consultations, the first nations discussions, etc etc each of which is also notoriously slow and largely not effective. And then there'll be the protests and so on. Getting anything actually done and finished can be a process that spans decades. The fact is we need to streamline that process in the worst way, but the current gov't is actually invested in lengthening it.
