Trudeau defends comments after the death of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the former Cuban president Fidel Castro was a dictator, but that does not mean it was inappropriate to acknowledge his achievements at the time of his death.

Trudeau says it was a statement meant to mark the death of a former head of a country with which Canada has had a long relationship.

Speaking in Antananarivo, Madagascar, where he is attending the summit of la Francophonie, Trudeau says he understands that some people who had been affected by the Castro regime would view things differently.

He says he never shies away from raising human rights, and that included doing it during his visit to Cuba.

The Liberal prime minister is facing criticism at home and abroad for his statement expressing "deep sorrow" about the death Castro, without mentioning his human rights violations.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard says that while historians will debate his influence in his home country, including his record on human rights, there is no denying the Cuban leader was a giant of the 20th century.

More praise was put upon Suharto who killed more people than did Saddam Hussein. This included several American leaders. Strange how no one objected to this praise upon a tyrant who was far worse than Castro and Batista combined.

One thing that comes to mind and I'm no expert on Cuban history by any means is the thought that this guy thought it would be okay for Kruzchev and the Soviet Union to set up nuclear missiles on the Island. Not sure I'd be giving the bearded puke any acknowledgments at all. Surely Trudeau has studied that much history.

the CBC is in repair mode after their poster child trudeau praised castro at la francophonie summit in madagascar.

at a press conference, one journalist from ottawa oife magazine asked trudeau, ''Was Castro a dictator.''

truth is that wasn't the issue.

the issue was and still is that trudeau spoke in favor of a dictator with one of the worst human rights records on the planet.

Fidel Castro was a dictator, Trudeau says - Politics - CBC News

and please mr. trudeau, spare us the BS.

because fidel castro kissed you on the cheek does not exonerate him of his crimes.

Those nukes that they were putting in Cuba were obviously a "first use" weapon, that is that the Russians were going to use them for a surprise nuclear attack on the US (and us, too). That was not a defensive deployment. Therefore, Castro mmust have agreed to the deaths of a hundred million or so. Trudeau HAS NOT thought this out.

To be honest Canadians and Canada has always condemned the actions of Tyrants many times over, but you will be disappointed to know that Canada has always maintained good relations with Cuba even with this Dictator at the helm. And honestly I've never heard much along the lines of condemnation from regular Canadians until now.

I'm not justifying Castro here but Canadians seem to at least enjoy his style of dictatorship because we prefer our vacations there compared for example, to a place like Germany.

Travel by Canadians to foreign countries, top 15 countries visited (2015)

So it kinda makes it hard for us to attack him like we're Cuban Exile's here.

I never could understand why Canadians loved to go to Cuba. After all, simply by going there they were inadvertently supporting a dictator and his so-called government. One place I refuse to go...

I get their rationale - that at least someone can earn an income - like buying clothing made in child-labour sweatshops: without the work the child might not get their bowl of rice that day.

Yeah, and meanwhile the UN made Robert Mugabe their "Ambassador of Tourism".

So, after all the hooplah, it turns out that the only people butthurt about this are, predictably, the Alt-Right.

At least it appears that Trump and his followers, along with the democrats have joined together to denounce anybody stupid enough to praise the reign of terror with was a Castro. Seems that Canadians are also standing firm in there repulsion to Castro as well, except perhaps for JT?

Hitler was a giant in the 20th century as well
In this case being under US sanctions was better than having the cities turned into the new sincity for the Mafia and the ultra rich Americans who would be put in jail if they tried this at home. Vegas was the solution. Despite that they thrived and the population educated on issues they considered as being important. In their case doctors and medical staff was the chosen route and what help Haiti got was from Cuba rather than the US. You have been reading the fake news again haven't you??
If you want the dirty laundry aired after death then why is that not the case when a US Politician dies?

You do know that the CIA is full of old NAZI members that would have been hung if they had been put on trial don't you? Perhaps that is part of the reason the US is such a blanket friend as far as money and weapons and protection from the international community goes. Let that go public and the citizens would revolt against the whole Government. 100M Gentiles killed just so a lie could be more convincing. With that one move the Nazis won the war as the CIA has never been cleaned out since then. People like that are made garbage collectors rather than being made into 'the Secret Police' who main weapon is to lie about everything. That can only work for a limited time and the only thing worse than a good lie is a bad lie.

You have to admire Castro as the sole Marxist who stood and prevailed against American Imperial Gringo.. with its sense of hemispheric colonial privilege.

Many democatic social idealists in Latin America, with moderate programs of land reform and wealth distribution.. Arbenz, Goulart, Allende, Peron.. could not and were brutally overthrown by CIA backed coups and replaced by tinhorn dictators like Batista, Duvalier, Pinochet, Videla... with their death squads, torture chambers and dungeons. All to protect the property rights of the United Fruit Company and sugar interests, consolidated american mining companies, and U.S. conglomerates in communications and industry.

Sadly Castro himself fell into the same ruthless pattern of social control. But he did bring in universal health care, free education through college.. something the U.S. has still not achieved.

So i say Viva Fidel.. Venceremos.. and RiP.

When the Mafia left Cuba they ended up in Miami. How is that place doing these days? Do they still allow the spring bash that US students celebrate graduation with??
Well done Fidel, you finished the race as a winner.
RIP

As always,
