When Trump supporters simultaneously celebrate the death of Fidel Castro and improving relations with Vladmir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Fidel Castro, the socialist Cuban icon who has died aged 90, as the "symbol of an era," the Kremlin said in a statement Saturday.

"The name of this distinguished statesman is rightly considered the symbol of an era in modern world history," Putin said in a telegram to Cuban President Raul Castro cited by the Kremlin. "Fidel Castro was a sincere and reliable friend of Russia."

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on Saturday hailed Fidel Castro, the Cuban socialist icon who has died aged 90, for "strengthening" his island nation.

"Fidel stood up and strengthened his country during the harshest American blockade, when there was colossal pressure on him and he still took his country out of this blockade to a path of independent development," Interfax news agency quoted Gorbachev as saying.

"In the past years, even when Fidel Castro was not formally in power, his role in strengthening the country was huge."

Gorbachev added that Castro would be remembered as a "prominent politician" who managed to leave a "deep mark in the history of mankind."

True.

I think, to be fair, this is good discussion to have about authority in general because we inherently treat dictatorship as a bad word though there is the possibility of some good outcomes in every form of government.

In this respect, I think it would be fair to recognise the nuance in Trudeau's comments in that he clearly shares our view that we should have a sustainable democracy even though you can acknowledge the merits of controversial figures like Castro.
How would you like a Trump dictatorship ?

The middle east did not invent the willingness of people to hop on an unsafe rubber boat. This "I am willing die" was invented by the Fidel Castro regime, between 65,000 and 80,000 Cubans have died trying to escape. This type of dictator, similar to Hitler, Stalin, Amin, etc.. do not and should never be glorified by any Leaders of the world. Cuba is more impoverished than Haiti!! so how can you praise its' dictator. The Castro brothers were dropping sandbags from helicopters into small raft full of people trying to escape their abusive regime, the sharks took care of the rest !! Nice guys, yes JT should praise them some more. Cuba also has a staggering suicide rate, it was so high that the Castro's forced the number to be billed as a state secret. JT has lost all respect I had left for him, he's stuck in some pipe dream world.

They didn't invent it, either.. Before them were desparate Vietnamese "Boat People" who also died in large numbers.

Before them were ships and boatsful of desparate Jews trying to escape fascism and later, communism.

Trump shouldn't have access to nuclear codes.
But Castro was such a benevolent dictator , why are you worried about Trump ?

To be honest Canadians and Canada has always condemned the actions of Tyrants many times over, but you will be disappointed to know that Canada has always maintained good relations with Cuba even with this Dictator at the helm. And honestly I've never heard much along the lines of condemnation from regular Canadians until now.

I'm not justifying Castro here but Canadians seem to at least enjoy his style of dictatorship because we prefer our vacations there compared for example, to a place like Germany.

So it kinda makes it hard for us to attack him like we're Cuban Exile's here.

Canadians vacation in Cuba because it's cheap. The good of it is that it provides work for the Cuban people who are so desperately poor.

Ottawa, Ontario - 22 January 2015

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia:

“On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our sincere condolences to the family of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and the people of Saudi Arabia.

“King Abdullah was recognized as a strong proponent of peace in the Middle East. He also undertook a range of important economic, social, education, health, and infrastructure initiatives in his country.

“I had the pleasure of meeting King Abdullah in Toronto when Canada hosted the G-20 and found him to be passionate about his country, development and the global economy.

“We join the people of Saudi Arabia in mourning his passing.”
